Parents got cable in the 1980s. Back in the days when the Disney Channel was a PPV station like HBO. I remember the scrambled reception for the Spice Channel. Always hoping you might catch a boob before the snow screen occurs. Never had a problem with scrambled TV, that's why man invented the descrambler. I eventually learned how to tune in the totally free Spanish audio after the sound was zapped in English. Watched WWF stuff in Spanish and the Spice channel could be brought in in "Spanish" too. Not need for second language on the sounds they made.

I'm old. My cable came with one of these boxes. Can actually remember when Mtv came on the air. There wasn't very many channels. the ones I remember are WTBS, WGN, Showtime, HBO, ESPN, and CNN. Had one of these as well... First, didn't have an antenna, just the local TV channel (CBC), and occasionally one from Edmonton (CTV, if it was cloudy). Then in the late 70's, Dad signed up with the new local cable subscriber, just so he could watch the new sports-only channels. There was 1... but there were also a bunch of independent stations from the US that played baseball (TBS, WGN, a few more) so Dad was happy. We got to watch The Movie Channel and all of the terrible movies that no one would show during the afternoon these days.

When I was a kid, I remember a long stretch of only having like 35-36 channels in a decently populated city. I knew there was a long time I was pissed cause I didn't have Cartoon Network. That came when we went up to 40 channels. That sounds a lot my the cable company in my town. we only had 30-35 channels until the fiber optic rebuild and you had to wait forever and a day to get it if you lived in the city. We had the black cable box with a silver colored dail for three years.
