I'm currently a full-time pizza delivery driver at the local Papa John's. Before that, I was considering working at the local Chipotle for my first job in almost ten years.
I've been wondering which pays more: a pizza delivery driver, working at a fast food restaurant, or working as a waiter at a restaurant?
From what I know, waiters and delivery drivers are paid below minimum wage, but can make the difference with tips.
Of course, I'm not going to be a delivery driver forever, but at least it gives me some work experience.

I have a friend that works at Friday's and he can make some good money. Sometimes he'll get regulars that'll give awesome tips. Sometimes he gets an off night with stupid customers that don't tip well. It seems like a waiter would make the most though.

Delivery drivers generally make more than fast-food workers and it's an easy job. Problem is that it beats the crap out of your car. Unless you're in a good area where all your deliveries tip it's not worth it. A good waiter certainly works harder than a delivery driver but makes as much or more money without beating the vehicle up.

If the place you're driving for is respectable, you'll make FAR MORE delivering pizza than you will any other food service job due to tips (legally, chains CAN pay you less than minimum wage, but the only chain I've heard takes them up on it is Domino's. Every other chain I worked for- including Papa John's, pays minimum wage.)

I don't just deliver pizzas; I also have to do the usual store stuff (prepare the food, wash dishes, clean up the store, stock up on soda, etc.).
At least, I get work experience, which I feel is why I think I'm not getting hired for other jobs.
What about working at Chipotle/Five Guys/any fast cuisine places? I feel that fast food restaurants are dying (in terms of hiring potential) due to consumers being aware of the health risks/ food quality associated with fast food, as well as competition from the aforementioned places.

Um, yeah- that's what I was doing when I delivered for them too. Same point is there- the money is better in pizza delivery simply because they'll pay minimum wage and tips- and even if they can pay under the level, unless your boss is a real prick they usually look the other way for any tips you receive (at least, every manager I've ever had did.)

Technically they have to pay you minimum when you are not on delivery but they all disregard this. I worked for Pizza Hut as a side job for two days. While they charge a 3 dollar delivery fee they pay the driver .33 cents a mile, one way. So they average delivery being 3 miles or less the driver makes a dollar or less and the store pockets the rest. I worked those two days and made less than minimum wage before the cost of gas. And this was not a franchisee, this was a corporate store. Prior to this in college I worked for a Pizza Hut franchisee. I made minimum wage, .75 cents flat for delivery, and tips. Made more money in 2000 than I could in 2014.

I get the feeling that the benefits of working as a pizza delivery driver might be offset by the gas prices and vehicle maintenance costs.
As for my GM, I get along with him well, and he said that I'm one of his best drivers.

I worked for a few months in 2007 at smaller franchise pizza place. They payed drivers 2.50 more than minimum wage, 1.50 per run, and tips. First week I made over $800. Its the major chains that are cracking the whip to screw the drivers.

I start a part time side gig as a pizza delivery guy tonight. Im stressed out about it because I'm worried about it not being worth the wear and tear on my car and pretty much breaking even financially. It is for a major chain so this thread is kind of disheartening.

For hourly, fast food. For earnings potential, waiter.

I forgot to mention that where I deliver, they give out generous tips (about 3-5 dollars, but I get as high as 10 bucks). Do you think being a delivery driver would look good on my resume when I sign up at another restaurant? I think the one thing that's keeping me from getting hired is my lack of work experience.

Another factor is the high delivery charges the stores charge now. At Pizza Hut they charged the customer 3 dollars, the driver got usually less than one dollar for the run, but the customers think that the driver is getting it all and they tip less.

I worked/work at Jimmy Johns. We're lucky because we're right across the street from all of these car dealerships, where the vast majority of our deliveries come from. Only bad part about it is that it's a highway, so it can take some time to drive over there.

How old are you that you went ten years without a job?
I have always heard that with tips pizza drivers make decent enough money. But it ususally isn't worth the wear and tear on your vehicle.
