On Youtube, I tried to reverse the discussion and pretend I had no idea who Kanye West is. The same people who made the jokes about not knowing who Paul was thought I was serious.

Remember when he was with the Beatles? That was awesome.

Only reason this gets a rise out of people is, every year, we get further and further away from that generation of music.. so every year, it's more plausible that kids wouldn't know who he is. I would imagine there's a good group of younguns who, legitimately, have no idea who Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, or Buddy Holly are. Not that they'd be so blind as to say, "Who are these no-name people?"... once they learned of their place in music history, they'd respect them.... but, it just starts with common, household names no longer becoming common, household names then eventually can turn to blatant ignorance.

Even if real, I don't see what the big deal is. The Beatles were 30-50 years ago and don't make the news regularly today. I wouldn't be surprised about people legitimately not knowing at least the names of its individual members. The Beatles changed music forever and are the biggest musical act there's ever been. Everyone who likes music should know who they are. I'm not so sure about the biggest musical act ever, but I'm a big Beatles fan.

This is complete trolling and people take it too seriously.
I mean, come on. Who really doesn't know that guy from Wings?

These are obviously fake or trolls.
You'd know who Paul McCartney is because of The Simpsons.

I don't know what other criteria there could be, really

I know. I shudder to think of the day when children do not know of Jesus Jones. But Honestly, I do think that in HS/College there should be a popculture class to teach kids of alot of these things. Show them of the Beatles, Show them Magic and Bird, Show them Citizen Kane.

Troll accounts or not, this is going to happen and it's not that big of a deal. I know I didn't know of a lot of performers before the 80s until I was much older. You can counter that with "but google exists!" but you're not going to type someone into google if you don't know about them to begin with.

I refuse to believe anyone doesn't know who Paul McCartney is, I mean they have google at their disposal. I have been on the phone to customers who I refer to my company's website, and they ask what they should Google. As in the equivalent of: 'Oh you can find all that out on the Freakin' Awesome Network website.' 'Oh okay... what should I type into Google to find it?' '...Freakin' Awesome Network.' Never underestimate a lack of computer savvy. The thing is, fake shitposts or not, plenty of people might not know who he is, and better yet, might not care. And you know what? Why the f*** should they, in either case? If you're a 14 year old and you listen to Kanye, there is no reason whatsoever to know who Paul McCartney is, and no reason whatsoever to have the inclination to Google it either. Lots of us on here may have been listening to the Beatles their whole lives (including me) but a lot of people don't even know the names of the members of their favourite bands either. Let's not get nutty about this, peeps.

I'm not so sure about the biggest musical act ever, but I'm a big Beatles fan. I'd say they are-who's bigger? Really? An argument could be made for Elvis and Michael Jackson. Technically, any random singer in this day like Beyonce, Drake, or Timberlake has reached a larger audience.

I know those were parody tweets, but the idea that a kid wouldn't know who McCartney is isn't that big of a deal. Most of his biggest hits were what? pre-mid 80's?
If you were born in the late 90's/early 2000s or after, its not unreasonable to assume you don't really know the Beatles or Paul. Unless you're really big into music, not knowing a musician whose popularity peaked 15 years before you were born isn't too far off base.

I'm not sure about the latter, but Elvis and Michael maybe. I think MJ and Elvis are as famous for their respective images/personalities as much as their music. The Beatles were huge, but Lennon aside (due to his socio-political views and the nature of his death) none of them were larger-than-life characters who captivated the public with their every move, so in that sense I believe Elvis and MJ have had a far bigger cultural impact.

Is that before Hoagy Carmichael's time? IDK because I have no idea who he is. I worked for his son as a researcher for fishing books, of all things. This was before I had a regular job.
