I don't know if you guys have ever heard of Charlie Hebdo, but it is a long-running French satirical magazine famous for its biting caricature and never pulling punches regardless of who their were mocking. They had already received threats from extremists after publishing a caricature of Mohammed and even had their offices set on fire (thankfully without any victim), but no-one would have ever expected a direct violent attack against them. And yet, this afternoon, three assailants raided the building and killed 12 people including 4 famous cartoonists who were specifically targeted: Charb, Cabu, Wolinski and Tignous. Eight more people were wounded, several of whom are in a critical state.
Bastards. F***ing bastards. Between this and the school that was attacked in Pakistan, I cannot comprehend how you can kill innocent, unarmed people and convince yourself that you're the part of the good guys. But I hope they don't get killed. That would be too easy and would make them martyrs. I hope they get caught and put on trial before the whole World. It's not just an attack against people, it's an attack against the very concept of freedom of expression.
IS IT THAT F***ING HARD TO NOT BE AWFUL?!! TO JUST LET PEOPLE WHO AREN'T DOING ANYTHING WRONG TO ANYONE LIVE IN PEACE?!!

That's very sad. I hope they are caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

They are barbarians. That's the ideology they adhere to. They are the most prominent threat to world peace.

There's very little I can say that wouldn't violate several rules. Hopefully France and the families of these victims will have swift justice.

Yeah, this is gonna get locked pretty quick haha. They are barbarians and they are to blame for what happened, and not anything they were offended by in the magazine. I can't go much further into how I feel because it violates the rules. I think this whole thread itself kinda violates them, but unintentionally on the OP's part because it is a major news story.

Hard to comment without violating rules, but this is sickening.

People who do things like this are seldom motivated by religion. That's just an excuse. Their inclination is simply to kill. That's what attracts them to this type of act. It's like the Satanic Verses situation in the late 80's. Many of the people calling for Salman Rushdie to be killed had probably never even read the book. I'd be surprised if most of them had even read the Quran. Barely literate, incoherent teenagers who expressed such a violent desire for him to be murdered, would be very unlikely candidates to have read a telephone book-sized novel filled with dense writing and magical realism. It's the desire to be violent that motivates them IMO, not religious faith.

Sad, horrific, but not totally unexpected given the people who did it. I am honestly surprised it doesn't happen more to be honest.
There is a solution to this, but God forbid you suggest it here in the West.

Insane. Its even crazier that it was a satirical newspaper. I'm not saying it would have been justified if it weren't, but geez.

For guys like these murderers, it's easier to kill a critic than to engage them in intelligent discourse. Cowards resort to violence when they are incapable of defending their beliefs and opinions through civilised debate. That's what they really strike at. They fear being exposed as frauds, as they would be if they had to articulate their thoughts, so they prefer to just silence any critical view with bullets and brute force.

Horrible loss. These were all brave and talented people, and deserve to be remembered so. Like basically everyone who's replied so far, I don't have anything good to say about the people responsible. That being said: this ToonZone article on the censorship of the South Park "Cartoon Wars" episodes remains one of the best and fairest pieces I've ever read on the larger issue here (although we all know how the whole Revolution Muslim thing really turned out), and I'm reminded of it while reading through this story. Its only political arguments concern Comedy Central and free speech, so I don't believe it's too much of a flashpoint for this forum. Worth reading in its entirety, but at the very least:

One of the victims, Stéphane Charbonnier, said in an interview in 2012:
So sad that it ultimately came to that.

The cowards even executed a policeman (who was there as protection due to the aforementioned previous threats) even though he was down and disarmed.
The one positive thing to come out of this is the solidarity about this. It warms my heart to see that even people who disliked the paper are giving their condolences and strongly condemning this attack. I am amazed that even international personalities and politicians are reacting and paying their respects to the victims and their families and friends. Goes to show that for every selfish, cowardly madman in this world, there's 10 000 decent people.
Edit: damn, even Google is paying their respect (don't know about the international version but at least the French version does).

I'm currently in paris and there are police who are armed to the teeth everywhere and I had no idea why there were Police sriens going off everywhere until my tour guild told me what has happened.
But R.I.P to those who died at the hands of those cowardly bastard c***s.

The attackers are not muslims. To be a muslim you have to be a person first.

I've always wanted one of these extremist ideologues to explain something to me:
If the truth and righteousness is on your side like you claim, then why does anything else matter? You attack, you bomb, you murder in the name of truth, but if you're as just as you claim, then you don't need any of this.

I get what you're saying, and I agree to a point, but there are people in this world (not these guys, specifically, but other people) who are living their lives, quietly believing what they believe, aren't forcing their beliefs on others, and just want to be left alone. However, these "intellectuals" (see also, bullies) attack them and their beliefs out of some strange superiority complex or pretty much no reason. The people being attacked might just not be good at "arguing" or don't want to start a fight or just want to be left alone. And as they are pushed and pushed and pushed and pushed by "challenges" I think they start to get angry and they push back using what they think will end the rather one sided debate quickly and decisively (such as, punching loud mouth in the jaw and knocking them out). No, I'm not saying that's right, I'm not saying that's good...but no one is standing up for quiet "don't want to argue" guy, and the guy pushing the whole thing isn't shutting up or leaving the person alone. Against someone who doesn't want to argue or push their beliefs on others, when does the challenging guy just shut up and let the dude be? It's hard to explain this without breaking the rules and getting into huge trouble. I know it's not the point you're trying to make, but it's a thought that's floating in my head.
