My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic #9: Zen And The Art Of Gazebo Repair Part 1 A. StoryPro: -I loved the Big Mac characterization here. Always figured him as the kind of person who is not so much the talky type, but rather a guy who keeps most of his thoughts to himself. Seems also to coincide with what most of the fandom think of him. Either way, this is certainly a character take I was very fond of. -The story is pretty simple and straight-forward, but it is OK in this case, because this is not an adventure story like the previous arcs but more of a slice-of-life/comedy story. In this case, it really works with Big Mac's straight personality bouncing off the batshit insanity of every other character in Ponyville. -The smaller parts that Big Mac gets involved are very funny for the most part in my eyes: *The running gag with the CMC and the fireworks is pretty adorable and I don't mind the recurring Sweetiedumb occurring here. While it has been a while in the show (didn't this only occur in Season 1?), I kinda like the idea of Sweetie Belle being a bit slow on the uptake (as long as it isn't done to the extreme of Sweetiepoo. Ugh). *One of the comics that solidified my love for Princess Luna. I adore Katie Cook's writing of her as this very outgoing princess that still has an archaic vocabulary and is kinda stuck in the old traditions. It really made her my favorite princess. The text-changing shirt was also a nice touch. *The smaller parts were fun as well (Octavia, Fleetfoot, the Cakes etc.) and left a smile on my face.  -Also liked the diverse background references this time (Derpy and the Doctor, Ninja Turtles, the Mane Six telling a story etc.). Contra: Cannot think of anything that I didn't like. It was awesome. ArtAndy Price is responsible for the art in this one again and proves why he is my favorite comic artist for MLP. His facial expressions, his lively art, his details, his background jokes etc.. He is really really good and I have nothing bad to say about him. So, yeah, an A is well deserved. |
