Group qualifying for the Pole row at Daytona, and we've got a couple of casualties in the first group. Not quite a Big One, but pretty close.... in QUALIFYING!!!!
Clint Bowyer, Reed Sorenson, JJ Yeley, Denny Hamlin, Bobby Labonte

I'd reckon that its a safe bet Clint Bowyer gets fined after his comments. Its sad, too, because he's absolutely right, and speaking his mind.

The format makes no sense. On smaller tracks that aren't reliant on the draft its exciting.
Couple that with the fact they're out there racing to determine 2 spots and will race again Thursday to get in to the 500, this is asinine.

Ok, that almost ended in disaster. I'm really expecting a Big One in Round 3.

Junior and Hamlin fail post qualifying inspection. Junior for ride height issues, Hamlin had a bad rear track bar.

Honestly, the NASCAR head honchos are getting about as bad as Vince & co in terms of ignoring relevant criticism and going for the "It's ENTERTAINING so you WILL like it, dammit" defense.
I don't think anyone is disagreeing that the heat-style qualifying is a boon for the smaller tracks, but Daytona and Talladega... aren't the smaller tracks. You already have restrictor plates establishing that these tracks are a little different, so why wouldn't it make sense to have a different qualifying format to acknowledge the differences as well?
That being said I don't know if the drivers have gotten more reckless lately as well, but I'm just worried that they're going to throw a car into the grandstands again at the rate this Speedweeks has been going. It's kind of bad when the ARCA guys drove a cleaner race.

No biggie." The best(or scariest) is when he's shrieking down the main straight in 6th going somewhere in the high 180s or low 190s and then quickly breaking and shifting simultaneously down to 2nd or 3rd on the first turn. I would be crapping my pants doing that but if you look at Josef's hands, it's all smooth and calculated. Race car drivers are insane.

You think if they had the GWC rule, he would still win that race?

You think if they had the GWC rule, he would still win that race? Yes. A lot of people forget that in terms of overtakes 98 was just as bad as the 2000 race. I couldn't have seen Labonte or Mayfield getting the win, especially from Dale on a plate race.

Yeah, from growing up watching during that time, I distinctly remember the 1998 and 2000 Daytona 500s being boring as all hell. If Dale hadn't won it in 1998 nobody would remember that one.

The only good thing about the 2000 race was Johnny Benson's underdog run in the Lycos car. Well, that and Dale cussing the race out post race.
