Mind you in 1991 the Simpsons were like the biggest most popular hip thing ever. If you were a certain age. But around that time Dougie Howser was, probably, 100 times more popular (or at least more watched). Hell, the Golden Girls were kicking Bart's behind in the ratings. You may really want to do some actual research before you throw those sort of "facts" around.

For context, Doink debut in late 1992, just before he attacked Crush and kept him out of the 1993 Royal Rumble. By that point, The Simpsons was on Season 4.Krusty should have been relatively known. Maybe not as much as now, but enough to be at least recognizable to most people as a Simpsons character. But Vince isn't most people and it usually takes a few years before he's caught up in pop culture. I wouldn't rule out that he knew of the Simpsons; he just may not have know of every single damn character.

Dougie Howser was NEVER more popular than the simpsons and definitely not 100 times so. Simpsons ratings < Dougie ratings and Golden Girl ratings I assume if lots more people watch something then it is more popular.

The Simpsons had far more average viewers but a lower ratings share due to its timeslot. TV Season | Doogie Howser, M.D. | The Golden Girls | The Simpsons | 1989-'90 | 13.34m | 18.51m | 27.8m | 1990-'91 | 13.68m | 15.36m | 24.4m | 1991-'92 | 11.99m | 12.06m | 21.8m | 1992-'93 | 9.67m | n/a | 22.4m |

Not to mention that even by that point, it was a merchandise phenomenon.

I stand corrected ... I was going by ratings not viewership. Simpsons FTW.

Looked over History of WWE for some info. Apparently Matt Borne worked 2 dates in 1992 prior to getting the Doink gimmick but that was in late September in Winnipeg and Hawk was already out of the company by that point. There's no record of Borne doing anything with them in 1991.

Who the f*** is Pruce Pritchard? Brother Love. A televangelist gimmick. Original manager of the Undertaker. That's Bruce Pritchard. This video title says its an interview with "price Pritchard"

Brother Love. A televangelist gimmick. Original manager of the Undertaker. It's actually Bruce, not Pruce. And man, was his character useless and out of place. I've always thought the Brother Love gimmick was the very first instance of Vince amusing himself with on-air characters and skits regardless of whether the crowd liked it or not. Actually, if you listen to the interview, Bruce had to try very, very hard to get Vince to let him do the character, he didn't get it either.

Are you talking TV ratings or overall social presence? By the beginning of 1992, The Simpsons had been involved in two incidents with the President of the United States(Less families like the Simpons, Barbara Bush's 1990 comments). 1991 was the year when they got more viewers than the Cosby show. The Simpsons were all over the place, and fully into pop culture. Yeah, but anyone who wasn't watching wouldn't know much more than Bart and maybe Homer. Certainly not Krusty It's weird how someone 7-8 years earlier knew enough about Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T to recognize them became so insulated he'd miss out on that.

There's no record of Borne doing anything with them in 1991. I did the same thing as I didn't have much knowledge of a pre-Doink Borne being around the WWF in the early nineties. After a quick scan around I found stories based on Hawk approaching the WWF with an evil clown idea but based on the movie IT rather than Krusty the Clown. This seems way more feasible since Doink was very much presented as the evil clown when he made his debut (although obviously toned down from Pennywise) and was completely different from how the slobbish Krusty was presented on The Simpsons. Also, it takes out the time scale issues with Hawk being gone by August '92 and Borne not appearing until later in the year which are obviously a massive issue with Pritchard's recollection of events. So, in other words do I think Hawk came up with the gimmick? Yeah, doesn't seem to be a massive stretch, but did it happen the way Pritchard says, probably not. It would be great to get the real story as Doink was probably one of the most memorable and polarising characters of the early nineties, but with Hawk and Borne now sadly gone, we might never get to hear the authentic story.

If Doink truly was based on Krusty, his face turn should have been Vince lifting Doink's shirt and saying, "Ah, here's the problem, someone set this thing to evil" and flicking a switch to "Good"

That's what he gets for betting against the Globetrotters. And Doink has his own clown college and that's where all the Doinks came from.

Is there a chance Borne could have been there earlier for a visit/try-out and not been on the actual card?

Vince: "What are you talking about, FAN? I have so heard of Krunchy the Clown! *belches* Wait, so........Vince knows what FAN is? Probably so but he most likely and unfortunately misunderstands our sarcasm for sincerity hence the booking of today's WWE.
