Picked up 2 new bootlegs today. here is another one of these Andre/Remco knock offs as well as what I'm pretty sure is a knock off of the LJN Hogan thumb wrestler.

Because I'm on a bit of a Transformers kick recently, from my personal collection, a green colored knockoff of legends class Lio Convoy.

Speaking of Transformers, I've been looking at a KBB KO MP10 for a few months now. Don't think it quite fits in this thread as while it's a knock off..... it's a quality knock off.

I'm amazed that those don't get heckin' sued and shut down by Hasbro. Not that I'm complaining, because they have some amazing figures, ones that are even better put together than Hasbro's. I just don't know how they do it.

I remember Phelous' review on Cerebral (a Krang knock-off) where he explained that it's a third-party figure that didn't get released as an official TMNT product, which makes me wonder if in some cases, they were supposed to be officially license but the deal fell through but maybe they had an agreement that in case of cancellations, the toy makers still get to use the molds as long as they don't release it under the license to recoup their losses or something. But then again, You've got stuff like VTS Toys that seems to specialize in making incredibly high-quality unofficial toys of major franchises and considering they include very realistic likenesses of actual people like Tom Hardy or Christian Bale, I don't know how they get away with it.

I don't think it was ever a planned licensing deal, but that they stepped up in part due to Playmates cancelling their own Krang classic figure they were going to do. I do know Hasbro has got to be aware of third party companies, given they muscled them out of Botcon when that was still going, but I think they probably think it is at least not predatory, given if someone seeks these things out, they aren't going to think it is an official product. It also is probably not produced in an amount that would come anywhere near their own output, and if they do not make a figure of that character, or it is different, it isn't really cutting into their bottom line. I think they also really do not want to create negative buzz, or hell, even alerting fans ignorant of the existence of third parties to them with a Streissand Effect from trying to strike at them. It could be any or all of those reasons, really, but they're sort of seen as a grey area compared to someone just bootlegging existing figures without original sculpting, etc.

I think sometimes likenesses are a little bit harder to prove when they're not backed by a corporation, or maybe they just fly under the radar enough. Like, if Christian Bale knew about it, and it pissed him off enough to think he deserved a cut of it or wanted to stop them, he could probably sue them. But his lawyers would probably tell him they wouldn't make enough off of it to make it worth their time, and that there's nothing necessarily defamitory about it. Now, if they were knockoffs of products made by places like Hot Toys, and it was muscling in on their territory, that might be a vested interest to them and their liceners, but I'm pretty sure VTS does all of it to fill holes in demand for specialty buyers. At the end of the day, it's probably cheaper to just let it slide than to pursue it (as long as you're not Disney.)

I'd have to see the full package head on, but I don't believe that's a bootleg - it looks more like a scammer bought a figure and returned it with something else in the package. Happens all the times these days. Some do it to get a free figure, some do it for the laughs. Pretty scummy behavior either way.

Last week I went to a local used toy store to dig through their action figures bins and came across this fellow, one of the last things I expected to find: That's a Mannix figure from Europe. Mannix was a company that got ahold of a few head molds from Hasbro and released a whole slew of figures that were more knock-off than straight-up bootlegs, but they're still pretty weird, with the line venturing into ripping off things like Street Sharks and others too (I fully expect it to be a Bootleg Zones episode sooner than later). Most every figure in the line had this body, just painted differently. For some reason, "Adam Bomb" here appears to be more plentiful in the trade market than others from the line; the rest go into the two and three-digit price range, but this figure is lucky to sell for $5 on ebay (which is about what I paid for him).

Relative to this, there is a third party absolutely amazing WFC-era Omega Supreme that came out a few years ago, and I wish so bad I could justify spending the money for it.
