This completely sucks; I love big bruisers in pro wrestling, and Morishima's been a top flight heavy hitter for years now.
That said, if it's his health he's staying on top of, then there's absolutely no faulting the guy, and I'm glad he's getting out while he's still doing well. Just hate that we won't get to see him stateside again, plus he was a major reason I attempted to at least keep up a little bit on NOAH.

It's a shame that he's been so banged up the past few years. The guy was fun to watch and I'll miss him.

They're saying it was something to do with concerns over diabetes.
Regardless, Morishima was a fantastic brawler and a big time draw in Japan. I'll miss the dude. He was brutal(In a good way) and it was just fantastic to watch.

Loved his program with Danielson, hell he also changed the course of history, Bryan was supposed to be nwa champion during that time before Morishima injured his retina, the landscape would've been a lot diferent. He was also a good credible monster. I think he had a wwe tryout, and JR said that it went good, wonder if they were close to signing him. Apparently Vince saw him and decided then and there just based off of his appearance that he was no good. He didn't see any of his matches or see what he could do in the ring, he just looked at him once and refused to bother with him.

That was stupid, f*** when even Jim fn Ross, the guy that when he was the head of talent relations signed Lesnar, Cena, Orton, and Batista says that Morishima is money Vince should've taken his word for it.

I was never a fan of his, but he certainly had a stellar career. Good on him, and it's a shame it is ending prematurely.

Legitimately one of the major reasons I bought those ROH PPVs back in the day. Dude was a beast. To this day, I see a backdrop and hear announcers shouting "BACKDROP DRIVER!"

Yeah, he had a good run, and I am glad he's getting out if he needs to. Better this than his health sneaking up on him.

Even Japan has B+ player issues.

Japan (and more specifically NOAH) has a LOT of B+ player issues. NOAH only really had 2 A players, Misawa and Kobashi. Akyiama and Takayama (who was a freelancer) flirted with A status but were still B+ players. Until the Morishima reign, the lowest Nippon Budokan Hall crowds NOAH had were around 14.5 k. Morishima vs KENTA for the ROH World Title did 13.5 k in 2007 when the company was still kind of hot (many fans were already burnt out and Kobashi had been away for a while battling cancer) and was only "outdid" in 2008 with the Global Tag League finals (wasn't that stupid) which did 11.5k. And then Morishima vs Rikio for the GHC Heavyweight title happened and did that 9.5k that Meltzer mentioned. It was the first time NOAH claimed less than 10k people at the Nippon Budokan.

He had a dark match and agents thought he disrespected the WWE for showing up out of shape, so they passed.

If WWE had taken him that year (which it seems he wouldn't have even accepted), and pushed him in about the role Umaga was in, he would have been very well remembered by now. But, alas.
The main thing to remember is that the ROH title run is, by all accounts, his best work. It was fantastic work! Morishima played well off of nearly everybody, and his heel mannerisms were excellent. The main issue that I've read from puro reviews, and seen a bit in his work, is that NOAH's booking emphasized star power and longevity over size, and as such he never got to really wrestle like a big man when it counted.

His initial confrontation with Samoa Joe in ROH where they "accidentally" bumped into each other was one of the most real looking things I've ever seen in wrestling.
