The next step is making sure Michael Denny and The Denny Sisters don't get their way either.

For all the shitty things that seems to be happening in the world, is cool to see that at least we are advancing as society in regards of love
Still, I dont understand the US constitution, I always thought that states had their own rules, how could the supreme courtmforce every state to allow gay marriage?

It's kind of hard to fathom for me that there have already been marriages performed here in Atlanta today according to reports. My state was kind of forced into it, but it's great for the people of the state. I'm especially happy for some of my close friends who will be able to marry here.

Even as a straight person I say great news No one chooses to be gay it's just how you are and it's pathetic of others to look down on them because of that. Well done America

As long as the government, in any form, was involved in any way with marriage, then this is the only correct outcome.
The right way to solve this whole mess yeeeeeeaaaarrrrssss ago, was to remove the government entirely from the concept of marriage. Government should not recognize, and thereby give it legitimacy, to some weird religious concept such as marriage. No civil unions, no tax breaks, nada.
If a church doesn't want to marry a gay couple, then that couple can move on to one that does. Or create their own church and perform marriages. The government should have nothing to do with it.

Very cool and WAY overdue. But, I can no longer use the standard, "I'll get married when EVERYONE can get married" excuse when GFs push the wedding issue. Also, they couldn't have timed it better. San Francisco Pride is this weekend so the city is gonna explode. I will be safely in Oakland....which is probably the first time anyone's ever said that. I'll be in the city to see my girlfriend on Sunday. Its gonna be insane! So happy to see this happen. I'm so glad that going forward gay couples are recognized as equal to straight couples according the the government! Hopefully this will help people struggling to come out as well!!! #LoveWins

Just to say it again. Do not drift into other political topics, and that means attacking those on either side of the argument. Be happy with the decision or just say you don't agree with it, whatever. You can state how you feel but no more wandering down the path of snide remarks about those in politics or elsewhere that do not agree with how you view it.

The Interstate Commerce Clause gives the federal government jurisdiction in affairs dealing with multiple states. Marriage gives the people who are married rights and privileges, the biggest being tax classifications. Married couples who file jointly are taxed differently than single people. I woke up to the news, couldn't be happier. The majority decision was worded beautifully.

This is the odd quirk about the United States and its constitution. The states are granted the freedom to make their own laws up until a certain point where it could violate the rights of its citizens guaranteed by the document. States can decide to allow or disallow gambling because there is constitutionally protected right to gamble. However, states cannot restrict voting to only white voters as it would infringe on the right which is in fact protected. The court found today that restricting marriage to only heterosexual couples is in fact a violation of the right to equal protection under the law and that same-sex couples deserve the rights and privileges afforded to all couples.

Congratulations to many who can now can get married without scrutinization by their local governments...
But in all seriousness, and maybe someone can clarify this for me: When people say that church and state are separate, does this mean that gay couples cannot get married in a church, rather a government office by a justice of the peace?

Marriage in itself was determined to be a federal right for all citizens which is how it can be enforced and recognized nationwide.

If the church doesn't, they can't get married in that particular church, but that comes down moreso to property laws. It's no different than if you didn't want a gay marriage in your living room, you wouldn't be forced to by the state, but that wouldn't stop a gay wedding from being in your neighbor's living room. Separating church and state means we don't live in a theocracy and have freedom of religious practice while not allowing the beliefs of others to hurdle our individual rights.

A church can still legally refuse to marry gay couples, but the courts can't, the states also have to recognize the marriages.

You're confusing weddings with marriage. The states will have to allow the marriage license. Churches do not have to allow a wedding ceremony in their building. Even for straight couples there's usually an interview process with the church leader to see if they want to allow the marriage ceremony (the wedding) to be performed in their halls, this ruling will make no difference to that.

I'm guessing it's similar to the way the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on interracial marriage in the 1960s and it trumped state laws on the issue.

This is an amazing leap forward compared to where we were a week ago, and it's quite cheering to know that that protection is now enshrined by the Supreme Court. I do hope that people won't see this as the end point of LGBT equality, it's one step down a long road, but it's a hell of a step nonetheless.
