What we'll probably see, in terms of anything that's actually successful, are efforts to gradually chip away and erode the progress made today. That's how it's gone with abortion/reproductive rights. I've already seen a couple articles about officials either not issuing marriage licenses at all or trying to cheat around the ruling by offering old forms with "bride" and "groom" spaces on them. Crazy how persistent some people can be when they don't get their way. I read earlier that they basically have 3 or so months to be dicks before they have to abide by the law and offer licenses. This is just the last stand from the old guard who realize they lost and can't cope with that.

While you're here, does this mean you, i and @irontyger can finally get this cyber wedding on with? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Are you seriously asking me if I want to be a part of the first ever triple threat marriage featuring an Orangutan? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I guess those slippery slope folks were right. Gay marriage gets legalized, and, look at that, we now have polygamy and bestiality in one.

"You are not two people. You are not one person. You are an experience. Make sure you're a good experience. Now go have fun."
A quote that's been stuck in my mind all day since reading the decision.

This is a great thing and all, I'm just wondering whats gonna happen when straight guys start marrying each other to get tax credits. Because thats a brilliant idea. Worked for Frank and Charlie ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ![](http://i.imgur.com/JNGmp1c.jpg) I was actually being serious, because its gonna happen, and its gonna happen a lot. Meanwhile Rick Scarborough promised to set himself on fire if this happened, Yes there are people that bitterly bigoted.
Mississippi and Louisiana are still holding out which I'm sure will make for great publicity and increased tourism.
Today equality won.

I've been reading that his quote was taken out of context and/or twisted around in some way, but I haven't heard/ read the direct quote, so I can't say for sure, that's just what I had heard.

Ok, Now I'll have to research it, BUT, How exactly do you twist someones words in that they now want to cosplay the human torch? Not a lot of middle ground ya know

I'm happy for all the people who can now live happier lives. I do hope, however, we can continue to respect people who have deeply held religious objections about same sex marriage as well. There needs to be an appropriate balance between the two.
As always, we should strive for tolerance and coexistence.

Well, it's not like they've done anything to stop the idea of marriage itself because of a man and a woman who are just friends or just have mutual interests marrying for non-romantic reasons. Same thing.

It's literally a part of constitutional law now. The only way it could be overturned is if Congress adds an amendment saying marriage is defined with a man and a woman, and that requires a near-unanimous decision to get ratified. This is the real deal my man. The Supreme Court can also deliver a subsequent ruling that overturns this one. That will likely be the way opponents try and attack this. Even with a constitutional amendment brought to the table, it'd be a guarantee to fail- if a constitutional amendment to make marriage defined as between a man and a woman were brought up, it'd need 39 states to ratify the amendment themselves to become part of the US Constitution. There were already over 11 states that legalized same-sex marriage outright even before yesterday, so it'd be impossible to get 39 states to agree. So...yeah, this is pretty much for real.

From the "pleasant surprise" files, even Arnold Schwarzenegger is celebrating, and isn't impressed with bigots:

I think this is a bit of smoke and mirrors really.
Marriage is the biggest sham going. The government are happy to erode civil liberties and get away with it by throwing people a bone like this every once in a while.
I'm happy for those who can now do what they wanted to don't get me wrong but I am rather cynical of marriage in general. All it essentially is is declaring to the government you plan to spend your life with someone and therefore would like some tax breaks for informing the government of your plans.
Also I don't think it's right to force churches to carry out gay marriage. If they want to be bigots its their prerogative, I mean if a person doesn't want to carry out that ceremony why would you want to even go to them for a wedding in the first place when there are plenty of accepting people willing to carry it out?

Also I don't think it's right to force churches to carry out gay marriage. Which they don't. A church is under no obligation to host a gay wedding, and for that matter is under no obligation to host a straight one. The courthouse just can't turn them away from the actual legal part of the marriage of, "Here, fill out these forms and enjoy your tax breaks."

I'm not in the US, but I assumed the ruling was for common-law marriage only. Are religious organizations now also required to allow same sex marriage e.g. Roman Catholic, Judaism and Islam? EDIT: BTW, congratulations and more power to all Conjux Endurae in the US... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I can't stand it when single people hate on marriage. If it's not for you, then don't do it. Being mad that other people want to is ridiculous though. In fact, my wife and I's 10th anniversary is in a couple weeks, and it has been the best time of my life. Also, as for the main topic at hand: America: F**k Yeah!

I'm single and I'm way too terrified to be married in case it does'nt work out, but for those who are brave enough to take the leap and work hard at it, it can be a great ride. This is another brave leap and I wish everyone the best.
