Gotta say, not the person I'd want to be facing in a Sing-Off. J's way too good at this. Going to have to put my best effort forward. Happy with what I've chosen so far this Season and I want to keep it going. Have to find a song that can beat this guy

Having finished first for the losing team, I feel a bit like this: To wit, "It's a f***ing stick!"

Song sent. Feeling pretty good about it, but J's going to be really hard to beat. Still, lasted longer than I expected and got to use a ton of music. Time to bring it .

My notes. I feel I may get some hate here. {Spoiler}Alice Cooper - King Herod's Song - not much different from an already great arrangement, just a little more "umph" and sung a bit snottier. Fun ragtime like piano and chorus line part. Fun tuba/Sousa.
Alice in Wonderland - A Golden Afternoon - Weirdest follow up to Alice Cooper possible. I like the horns and strings, but overall am not feeling it. Largely due to the vocals I think.
The Black Keys - Little Black Submarines - Sedate Black Keys, hrrmm. Also love a quiet tambourine. The vocal feels just slightly off. Nice slow down in to the rock out. Vocals fit way better when it kicks it up. Steady drums and nifty guitar bits. Sounds really familiar, maybe like an 80's or 90's song.
Colin Hay - I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You - Colin "gott danged" Hay!... He is playing near here soon, might need tickets. Dammit, focus. Ok, Pretty much what you expect from Colin, slow, mournful, beautiful. Now I have to resist the rabbit hole.
Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best - starts with vocal effects(sounds like mega phone, let us see if it is used for effect or a crutch. I like the bass and guitar bit, drums are ok. Feels like it was dug out of a 90's b-side collection. Ok, but if I never hear it again, not going to fret it. I will give the benefit of the doubt, vocal effect was used for effect, but I think it became a crutch unintentionally. The song just doesn't make me feel anything.
Depeche Mode - Behind The Wheel - The soundstrack to a David Lynch film? I need dayglo paint and a black light right now! And cheap80's special effects. I like the song, but I am having a damned neon flashback right now. Probably longer than it needs to be.
Faces - Stay With Me - Great opening guitar, then the bass kicks your asses! Good strained bluesy vocal. Great jump up in tempo.
The Finn Brothers - Edible Flowers - Early vocals mixed way too low. Nice bit of piano progression. Music is all very competently done. Guitarbro's vocals more enjoyable than Pianobro. Dual vocal is nice. Good, but kind of uninteresting,
Grizzly Bear - Blackcurrent Jam - Falling asleep....Oop, louder. Kind of like 3 songs in one. Skill and craftsmanship is there. Wrong time of night to listen to it though.
Leonard Cohen - Something Like The Blues - funky, simple bassline, shakers! Slow piano... And vocals by a movie serial killer... Very nice recording, everything feels like the right level. While slow and quiet, never boring, he even said never boring as I wrote that! I never want to be woken up to this song. Great way to wet the bed.
Lisa Hannigan - Lille (Something New) - Coffee shop guitar! Pretty vocals. Googled her and swooned. Very well done sparse sounding song that hangs on the vocals. Nice tinkling.
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. - Pretty sure Ronson always has a thin layer of something covering him. Do not like the female vocals, like the duder. Like the tempo change. The song would be better without vocals at all. Good music undercut by the vocals. If the song had the hand claps they show Ronson doing it'd be better too.
Paul McCartney and Nirvana - Cut Me Some Slack - Ok, this is pretty funny. Musicians are obviously top notch. Another song with a cool jump in tempo. Overall it just kind blends though, not really showing what made either act standout. And ends up sounding kind of like a Misfits tribute.
Santana featuring Rob Thomas - Smooth - Hella musicians. Vocal effects used for a reason and not the entire song, almost overused though. Great Latin flavor, sick bass that gets a little lost behind the vocals and guitar. Vocals are the weakest part of the song, but not offensively so.
Voltaire - When You're Evil - Early violin had me singing "Istanbul, not Constantinople". Musically this is pretty damned awesome. Lyrics are fun. Vocals aren't great, but I think they need to be this way to work. Kind of like if the Robot Devil got a recording contract. Perfect for a dirty cha-cha.
Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey - When You Believe - something really jacked up about going from Voltaire to Whitney and Mariah. Great music, hella singers. Great arrangement. Pet peeve for all singers with four octave ranges... Do we need those whiny vocals runs every time you sing a song? We know you have talent, please use it in a more pleasing fashion.

I definitely got away with one here. The more I thought about it, the more I knew Smooth wouldn't score well. It was too late to change, though. Whew!
Good luck to J and Tyger. We'll be losing a great competitor here.

J's going to be really hard to beat. Eh, probably won't be that hard as you are a hell of a player. You need to quit being so modest. I'm glad you made it as far as you have this season, very well deserved. Good luck buddy. I know I'll need all the luck I can get. Just try not to beat me too bad. Please?

I didn't realize I mistyped the final scores It was 292-254 Well, that makes me feel slightly better about my team. Also somehow I scored over 100 points. I thought my songs would do well, but goddamn. EDIT: J's going to be really hard to beat. Eh, probably won't be that hard as you are a hell of a player. You need to quit being so modest. Don't discount yourself lad. You're a great player in your own right.

We'll be losing a great competitor here. Technically it is a very good song, aside from the vocals, that knocked it down a few places for me, as did the feeling of slight over production. Whether I like it or not it is a damn fine song from many perspectives, and that helped it hang in the middle of my pack.

I just ended up knowing that it wouldn't do well with certain judges...and rightfully so. Not everyone has the same taste.

Smooth is probably one of the top 5 or 10 most played songs since it came out so I could easily see how something like that Let It Go,Hey Ya etc could actually just get under a judges skin if they were in a position where they had to hear it ad nauseum upon it's release. Anyhow good luck Tyger and J you both have consistently picked great songs all game I definitely though if you 2 were facing in a singoff it would happen later on in this season.

Editorial note: it isn't literally a crime that Cohen's only been used twice in ten seasons (with his debut being last season), but it's close to one.

In maybe divulging too much of my process, I weigh technical prowess, recording quality, and emotional resonance. With the last being the most weighted. "Smooth was damn high on tech(Rob's vocals being the knock), really high on recording(like I said above, it may be too slick for what it is), but is basically doesn't resonate at all. Songs like that will end up near the middle most every time, especially with acts like Colin Hay and Faces hitting all the check boxes mid to high level.
