Cage's disrespect of Marvin Gaye is a sticking point in negotiations. ....I'm never gonna live this down huh I love Marvin Gaye as much as the next rational person... But technically he should have been on the banned list. Don't know how he was overlooked. Still doesn't excuse Cage's blatant disrespect lol

A lot of genuine love for this round. Once again, the a-game was brought to the table. One unfortunate incident of rules violation that slipped through. Otherwise, I think it's a travesty that one of these songs got points for 3rd for me while I look and see that someone else right in the same ballpark had to get 10th. Rankings not a clear indicator of how I valued the entries. All great work.
========================= =========================
The Gun Club - Sex Beat Love how lead vocalist Pierce leaves the notes as quickly as he enters them. Silence is a great unsung hero when used right in music. The dramatic pause between "move" and the guitar riffs and then "sex beat." It just doesn't force-feed the style of the song and that's a great complement to the otherwise rapid fire vocalings. Also, the waves of dynamics are very very effective in the song. The instrumentation is pretty rough and ready throughout, but the vocal emphasis and stylings at various points give the song credible layers that I really appreciate. I'm a fan.
Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man Repeat artist. And no less than four or five rounds ago. Nuff said. Gonna see ya at the bottom.
Jamiroquai - Canned Heat Jamiroquai's best song, for my money. Funkalicious opening, like so many of the group's songs. I'll tell you what gets me about Jamiroquai, however, is that the vocal always seems to overwhelm the musicianship (more of a commentary on other tracks, but it partially applies here). I'm sorry, but Jay Kay just leaves something to be desired vocally when he does this; it's too much of a contrast with the music when he does the rapid fire runs. Now, when he stays on the beat with background vocalists and slows it down to inject some soul in there, I freaking love it. That's why I say Canned Heat is their best track; it's one in which the band stays together the most. But it almost never fails that the setback for Jamiroquai is how Jay Kay will take the song one direction while the music goes in another direction at some point. It's like each one is not in need of the other. Still, I like how you nailed the directive for the round. Well done. It's a great number that hit on its best cylinders and doesn't fall victim to vocal lapses like some of the group's other songs.
LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change Ah yes, LCD Soundsystem, how you baffle me. A lead singer who can't sing a lick (or doesn't really ever try to sing) but your musicianship wrecks havoc on my mind ... in a good way. Such an interesting and intriguing group. Here is another example of the conundrum, the enigma that is LCD Soundsystem. The plus side: Murphy really goes for the gold in actually singing in this particular song. The bouncy music that you've never heard anywhere else is still on point, and you have a unique song style from the group vocally, and that's a clear cut way to earn points this round. Really good choice here. Bold and needs to be rewarded.
Mando Diao - Dance With Somebody Love the bounce in the guitar rhythms in this one. That's the defining characteristic that pulls this one through: it's all about bounce. Head nods in demand. Also a bit of hypnosis in the verse vocals with that bounce as a background. Good job connecting with the round and giving us a flavor that we haven't had yet. The verse structure is pretty right on point. The chorus vocals leave something to be desired to me. Weak lyrically and just breaks from the character of the rest of the song. Otherwise, pretty golden for me!
Marvin Gaye - Got to Give it Up VERY smart and current pick. Nice play upon pop culture's current centrifuge. That bass line! Get after it! It's got soul. It's always nice to hear a smooth track that has been overplayed to death. This is a nice pick less likely from Gaye.
Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns I mark for this! It's time we went into this well. Good musical know-how right here! It's like I'm experiencing a history of rock blooming out of this little track. We have heard a bit of the hypnotic and the funky and the psychadelic earlier this round, but this is a cool mix of something that feels a little like neo-psychadelic-rock. It's not 80s. It's not grunge. It's just a cool new root system for something else to bloom from. I can only imagine what it would've been like before the internet to hear this track, this sound (because it would have to be by sheer chance) and then I wonder how I would've reacted and felt about it. Would I have been smart enough to see that a change was coming or that a change was happening? A really smart track that just resonates with me historically-speaking. There is the oxymoron of "restrained power" in that vocal and it's a song that's just dying to be grunge. I'm telling you, it may not be the best track of the round, but as a judge, it's one that just toys with the elements enough to resonate with me as something you just doggone don't hear every day. I musically marking right now.
The Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing I spoke of musical enigmas earlier, and The Scissor Sisters are the best candidates to fit that description for me musically-speaking. I have no idea what they are or what they are trying to do sometimes. Part of me REALLY REALLY appreciates a pseudo- re-invention of glam rock because their cultural relevance is really on point. And they are fun. I mean, the video itself is vibrant and I love it. I'm very familiar with the track here, and as a song it has always just ... existed. Nothing too much more or too less than that. And here's why. It's not so much a re-invention of disco or glam or pop musically. And it doesn't feel authentic at all enough to be an homage to Bee Gees or anything like that. At the same time, the artists feel really invested in their track, but I just have a hard time with its "place" in the musical landscape of all that is music. I think my response to The Scissor Sisters has mostly been musical tolerance, because I really do appreciate their act and their personality and their presentation. But in terms of the name of the game (music), they have always been an "I-can-take-it-or-leave-it" type of sound. At the core, I've heard this music before in a different era, I've heard the vocal stylings before; it's just a song/musical performance that doesn't add to the spectrum. It just exists. I totally get the appeal, but the music--for me-just doesn't climb the ladder high enough.
Vickie Sue Robinson - Turn the Beat Around Ugh, bad luck of the draw for you with this judge. First off, it's a track I love. But it leaves a horrible taste in my mouth that I picked this song seasons ago with Gloria Estefan's version (a live version that ruled, in fact, but I digress). As a host, I always say "no" to either the cover or the original if the other has already been picked UNLESS it's a cover round as a theme for the game. I guess I'll try to put my judging preferences aside and judge this as if I hadn't already picked the song, but it's a tough thing to do. I hate when a song gets re-used in the game if it's not a cover round. Or, at least it needs to be a drastically different version that reinvents the song, or if it's the original, it needs to be unrecognizable from the cover that was picked earlier. I guess this can be my heads up for everyone not to do it, because I'll likely have a bad taste left in my mouth for this entry. And oh my, you had to pick live dancing on Soul Train to accompany the track. Love it! That really adds to it, but I'm still judging on the song. Still, way to conflict me a little bit, because I mark for this video entry.
Washington - Rich Kids Um, that video rules! You all are being really clutch with your picks in this game. For the most part, it always feels fresh, and I don't find myself sighing at the same ol, same ol like I have at some points in other seasons of the game. Yet another example of why is right here. It's not as flashy or technically brilliant as some of the other picks, but staying in the pocket is just what the doctor orders for this song. It's not escapist pop rock. It's just pop rock. I really dig that it sticks to its guns and provides a relevant pop song with a pop dynamic that works for what the group intends with an audience of this day and age. This is such a stacked round. Please pay attention to comments and not rankings. Fabulous job.
The Wombats - Let's Dance to Joy Division Yet another band that can be hit or miss with me. I like plenty of tracks from The Wombats, but it feels rushed at times and a bit of a pandering song. To its credit, there are plenty of fresh approaches to the lyrics, not reliant on convenience, and it sometimes slides into some lyrical pitfalls, but those are actually a clever nod to the source (Joy Division) so that makes it actually pretty delightful to me. I wish they wouldn't get so caught up just jamming and would try to layer their songs a little better and treat some genuinely good vocal moments with care. The backup vocals mixing with the lead, for instance, is GOLDEN in this song. Also, there is an amazingly clever bridge to this song that is more along the lines of the brilliance this song deserves. There is just something about jam musicians--amateur, professional, or otherwise--that disallows them from letting off the ADHD accelerator and just letting their music make good sense. Lots of wonderful moments in this song; I just wish they went for all-out perfection.
1. Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns
2. The Gun Club - Sex Beat
3. Jamiroquai - Canned Heat 4. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change 5. Vickie Sue Robinson - Turn the Beat Around 6. The Wombats - Let's Dance to Joy Division 7. Mando Diao - Dance With Somebody 8. Marvin Gaye - Got to Give it Up 9. The Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing 10. Washington - Rich Kids
11. Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man

I think I see why it got through. looking back at the old thread.
Since I want to join if there's a Fan Idol XI, just making sure, You can't use the same artist even if it's in another band/solo act. Correct?

Correct? It seems to depend on the host. I remember last season I submitted a song by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullett Band, and Cage (who was hosting at the time), noted that if someone wanted to use Seger's solo material, they could.

Correct? Depends who hosts. But it is also going to have to make it through judges who know the rules. Here is a safe question to always ask... Would I have picked Billie Jean cover if Chris Cornell wasn't on it? And then later in the same season, would I have picked Like a Stone if Cornell wasn't the singer? Two different "labels" or "names," but the answer there is clearly no. Therefore, I would've illegally double-dipped. On the other hand, you got Mother Love Bone. Would you have picked them in one round and Pearl Jam in another if not for the shared guitarist? Yes, you would've. Because likely the part that's being played stays "in a pocket" and the guitarist is likely interchangeable. (Not always the case, but it's a simple way of measuring up what comprises "double dipping.") If you had Jack White killing it on a series of guitar licks accompanying Loretta Lynn, the singer, and later you picked a White Stripes song, that's double dipping. Jack White fingerprint on both those tracks.

If we get in to a "Van Halen" thing, the earth may explode.

Went with a band that I am absolutely stunned has never been picked in the history of this competition. It'll likely bomb but I had to go with something from deep left field.

If we get in to a "Van Halen" thing, the earth may explode. For frick's sake. Pedantic? The whole reason an opera pick was made was because Bruce Dickinson was singing. The reason for that Iron Maiden vocal is Dickinson. The whole reason Billie Jean got over was because Chris Cornell vocal. Same vocal result with Soundgarden. The game is competition and versatility. You only know one singer? You won't last here. It's a competition. Convoluted? ? Don't enter a music contest if you think it's too much to know more than one singer. Geez. You must be from one of the other forums where every other post is word-twisting. Read the examples. Fingerprint is a metaphor. I suggest you look the term up. Legit p***** me off there. I'm not the music god. But seriously, dude, if you can't pinpoint the effects of a Chris Cornell vocal versus a Soundgarden lead vocal, then that's a problem you have, not me and my "authoritative fingerprint definition." It's not convoluted. It's common sense. (Not mad at Gus or anything since I used the Dickinson example. Judge God just coming in here and making his little passive aggressive decree just hit me the wrong way and used the last round as an example. This game has gone on for 10 seasons and the game rules are the same. "Fingerprint manifestos" didn't change jack. Those picks have often been rejected. Gus always brings a big punch to the competition, and I respect that.) Oh and for the record, make an Eddie Van Halen solo pick and then pick Van Halen with him at the lead guitar and it's the same result. That's common sense, not pedantic and convoluted and any other word you've seen used on a message board that sounded cool.
