What was it for?
To take heat of HHH for being handed the title to? So HBK would get a feel for the business again by being World Champion? To legitimize the title, since this was HBK's only World Title reign in his 2nd run? Break up a LONG run for HHH? Because if he didn't drop it that month, he would hold the title from Sep 2002 - Sep 2003 until Goldberg showed up.
Did anyone take anything away from that? I know he had one dream match with RVD, but he didn't do much with the title before dropping it back to HHH.
Anyone liked or even understood this title run from HBK?

I think it may have been to break up the HHH reign of terror, IMO. It was largely forgettable, he had the match with RVD which wasn't that great from what I recall and was a referee for a #1 contenders match with HHH and RVD as well.

How about that he won the title on the same show as The Big Show.
Survivor Series 2002 = Spring 1996

Probably just a "thank you" run. At that time the WHC was more important than the actual WWE title after all.
Didn't he never win the title again to prove a point that he didn't need a title to be over?

It was weird he only had it a month. I remember Vince telling him to enjoy this reign since he had problems in his other reign. Should have lasted longer.

Didn't he never win the title again to prove a point that he didn't need a title to be over? Yes, I believe so. In his 2nd run, 2002-2010 he won the World Title in 2002 and a tag title in 2007 with Cena for the Wrestlemania 23 storyline, and the unified tag titles with HHH in 2009, that's it. Crazy in 8 years in his 2nd run that's all the gold he had. Even a token IC title run would've been great, to build it back up. I thought they were on the road to that when Shawn battle Jericho for the IC title on a Raw in 2004. Shawn Michaels Intercontinental Champion in 2004 would've teared the house down. Him putting that title on the line against Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 21 would've been a blast. They trade the title back in the forth in the summer of 2005 would've been neat.

They saw his tights that night and felt so bad they decided to put the strap on him.

Just to pop the crowd and extend the HHH program with more heat. Reason he didn't want another reign was IIRC he didn't want to have the house show workload that comes with it.

JR's "Shawn Michaels! Shawn Michaels is the World Champion!" call was great...

I wish it was longer, only because it would've spared us from HHH-Scott Steiner at the Royal Rumble

Vince is a big believer in "No new, fix old". If you're a former main-event guy, Vince will try to put a title around your waist when you return.
Backlund got the strap. Hogan got the strap. They *tried* to give Batista the strap. Hell, even Bret got *a* title run, and he was prohibited from taking a bump. The New Age Outlaws won the tag titles when they came back.

I always thought it was because they wanted to establish the Elimination Chamber and leave fans with a happy moment to associate with the match since it was the first ever EC.

Thanks for everything Shawn, here is a title run you'll actually remember. haha Pretty much. Vince did the same with Hogan's one month title reign in that same year. Bret's 1 day US title run also comes to mind

I was so pissed as the biggest HBK fan in the world at the time and I didn't get any Raw shows or have the internet. I saved up and bought both Survivor Series and Armageddon on DVD and watched them back-to-back.
I went from the happiest fan in the world seeing HBK win the title to the bitterest when I saw him lose the belt 3 hours later to HHH again.

I always assumed it was a "thank you/feel good" moment.
Even now I remember the finish and JR yelling "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!?"
It cemented HBK as still "having it" for his return but he never needed the title after that, which just shows how great he was.

They should give him a title reign right now.

While he didn't need the title again, I kind of wanted him to get it at least another time or two. It got stale seeing Michaels lose championship feuds, for me anyway. I can see why it was good of him to step aside and let others take that role, though.
