If I could rewrite some booking a little...
I would've had Nexus win at Summerslam, keeping them strong in their first big match and really setting the tone that the WWE was in trouble. I would have had things play out similarly to how they did in reality from there, with Cena ending up as apart of Nexus. The storyline I'd tell from there would be Cena being forced to serve under Wade, doing his bidding and being his destroyer above all others. The undercurrent storyline continuing with Otunga as the Starscream to Wade, trying numerous times to usurp him but proving himself valuable to keep around regardless.
Wade would ensure Cena gets his members some championships, the tag belts for Slater & Gabriel and the IC title to try to keep Otunga distracted & happy for the time being. Culminating in Wade wanting John Cena to help him win the WWE title, but Cena intentionally fails to help him win it, albeit in a manner that could be up for interpretation of whether he dropped the ball or messed with Wade.
But that's okay, the newest member of Nexus screws Randy Orton out of the title and helps Wade win it.
CM Punk.
From there, we roll into the Royal Rumble. Cena baffled that Punk's joined Nexus and he's seemingly all on board to be Wade's lackey. There's a few segments where Cena tries to pull Punk to the side to talk to him one on one, questioning him on why he's apart of the Nexus, why would he willingly join this group, that they're both WWE, they're the ones Nexus made their name on. Similarly I'd have Otunga get some time with Punk, trying to talk him into working together to bring down Wade and an implication that Otunga will back stab Punk only when the time's right.
Yet Punk shows bizarre loyalty to Wade, claiming he has no intention of betraying him, that he's Nexus through & through, questioning John on trying to talk that way about their leader.
The Royal Rumble, Wade wants the Nexus to enter it and to ensure he gets easy pickings. He wants them to be the ringers of the match and ensure some lame duck wins the match so that he has an easy time at Wrestlemania. The Royal Rumble proceeds pretty much to Wade's plan, with a few of the Nexus members being eliminated one by one over the course of the match. It comes down to Otunga, some lame duck (let's say Santino), Punk and Cena.
Otunga eliminates the lame duck. Punk immediately eliminates Otunga. Leading to Punk and Cena duking it out for the Royal Rumble title shot.
Cena wins. Punk doesn't seem bothered by this at all.
When later questioned about eliminating Otunga by Wade, Punk reminds him that Otunga betrayed his orders, Punk was reminding David where his place was for Wade. Wade seems content with this.
The lead in to Wrestlemania, Wade uses the rest of the Nexus as a shield against Cena. One by one Cena puts them down, Otunga, Slater & Gabriel. Leaving only Punk & Wade, and yet Punk seems to be willing to act as a shield for Wade, creating conflict in Cena. Confused over why Punk is so willing to serve Wade.
Title match time. Cena versus Barrett. Fairly even match, albeit thanks in part to Wade cheating his butt off. With Punk on the outside cheering him on the entire time.
Things are starting to tip in John's favor.
That's when the ref goes down.
Wade immediately grabs a chair. He goes to swing!
Punk grabs it from him and with a gleam in his eye, watches Cena AA Wade and get the pin. Crowning the new WWE Champion, John Cena.
CM Punk applauds him, ripping off the Nexus armband. The following RAW Punk reveals it was all his plan to destroy the Nexus from the inside for trying to make their name off of him and to get what he wanted. Cena as the champion, so that he could take on the biggest & baddest in the WWE and take the title from him.
From there, it'd roll similar to the Summer of Punk, minus some of the more shooty aspects of it. With it being more about Punk wanting to face and best the Ace of the company and prove that he's the Best in the World. And, ideally without as crappy of a pay off as we got for the Summer of Punk.
Once Punk has the title, from there you can slowly transition him fully into a babyface and have Wade resurface back into the title scene, livid with Punk and wanting revenge while ADR lurks in the background. Cena gets confronted by the Rock and you roll into the next Wrestlemania with the dream match, Cena/Rock and the WWE title match, Punk/ADR. With ADR acting as the powers that be's appointed contender for Punk.
