I'm not sure that threads for the individual leagues will get enough discussion in them, so I'm going to see if a shared thread will suffice. At this point in time, both leagues are about to go into the post-season, with the Fremantle Dockers set to claim their first minor premiership in the AFL and the Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos dueling it out for the minor premiership in the NRL. I know there are plenty of Australian posters here with vested interests in these leagues, and maybe a few curious posters from other nations following along too, so let's see what kind of discussion we can drum up. Interestingly, I'll actually be going to a rugby league game next week (Cronulla Sharks v Manly Sea Eagles, one of the big NRL rivalries), so that should be good times with the Sharks about to go into the post-season on some great form (10 wins from their last 12 matches).

No A-League in this thread?

No A-League in this thread? Never crossed my mind, to be honest. I was just thinking that would end up in the existing football thread.

Fair point, although that thread is domniated by European football. Just thought with A-League being a summer league that it might keep the thread going over the break in footy seasons.

We'll see how we go. I know I used to post the A-League results in the football threads until my family stopped getting Foxtel, so I haven't really followed it in the last few seasons.

I'm an Essendon supporter. Footy is dead to me this year.

Hawthorn supporter ... So you probably all hate my smug ass.
Hoping the Hawks do the three-peat. But it's going yo be tough if the Hawks have to travel to Perth during the finals. Top 2 still possible but highly unlikely.

AFL.com do these video every week.
Also you if you want a funny take on the AFL in podcast form.. Then I recommend the 'Junktime AFL Podcast' with Michael Chamberlin and Adam 'Ex Captain Coles himself' Rozenbachs. They go through each match, sometimes bring in special guests and like to joke about the cliches that go on in the game (like the saying Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater and players favourite movie always being The Shawshank Redemption).

You can see from the Collingwood - Geeling game why the Cats persisted with Menzel after four knee reco's, seriously talented.
On the NRL side of things the top 8 is all but decided Manly is the only team that can mathematically jump into the 8 but it's unlikely as they would need the Dragons to pretty much forget how to play footy for them to overcome the for & against deficit.
I personally see it as a race in 2 between The Roosters & The Broncos. North Qld are missing Michael Morgan. Whoever finishes 4th (Sharks, Storm, Bulldogs or Rabbitohs) don't have the depth to win.
As an Eels fan, I am already looking to 2016, we have recruited very well & I'm optimistic of us pushing for finals next year for the first time since 2009.

The Storm take it out 15-8, sealing (at least) 5th place and a home elimination final next week. Could still end up 4th and playing away in a non-elimination final depending on the result of Cronulla v Manly.
It also seals the minor premiership for the Sydney Roosters, their third in a row. They play tomorrow against 7th placed South Sydney Rabbitohs.

I came across an Australian rules football game a few weeks ago at two in the morning (eastern standard time in the good ol' U.S. of A) and basically used what time I spent watching the game quoting this to myself.

I'm sympathetic towards Adelaide just because North are going in with the sole intent of tanking and playing bruise free football like they always do.

In the AFL Round 23 last round before finals. Richmond beat North Melbourne pretty good but it was not enough to leap Sydney on percentage.. So if Richmond want to finish 4th they will need Sydney to lose and lose by a lot of points.. which is not gonna happen.
Adelaide meanwhile can still get a home final next weekend.. First today they need to beat an out of contention Geelong in Geelong (which is not as difficult as it used to be, Melbourne did it this year), and they will need The Bulldogs to lose to Brisbane. Don't see the Dogs losing, but they have to travel up there so you never know.
Battle the 2nd Spot and a Home Qualifying will be decided. Hawthorn and West Coast both taking on teams they should easily beat. Hawks taking on Carlton and West Coast taking on St Kilda. West Coast are in the driver's seat here though.. They should get the second spot. Hawthorn could slip down to 4th in the unlikely event of a Carlton upset. Hell even Sydney could pinch 2nd spot if both Hawks and Eagle slip up.
I will be attending the Hawthorn/Carlton game. It's a grey miserable day in Melbourne.. but it may be my last chance to attend a match this year. Ironically both teams are paying tribute to Cooper Ratten (son of Hawthorn assistant coach and former Carlton player/coach Brett Ratten) a young man that was killed as result of drink driving incident.. Yeah Luke Hodge is going be feeling really awkward during this... and rightfully so. I hope the first person Hodge apologised to was to Brett Ratten.
Anyway there is my weekend preview.
Go Hawks.
