And now we have our final eight for the NRL. Two points separated the entire top eight at the end of this, foreshadowing what could be the most open finals series in forever...
Qualifying Finals: #1-Sydney v #4-Cronulla #2-Melbourne v #3-South Sydney
Elimination Finals: #5-Penrith v #8-New Zealand #6-Brisbane v #7-St. George Illawarra

Man, the sports prescient of Melbourne is going to be chock a block Friday night. With a NRL and a AFL final (featuring two Victorian sides, one being a finals starved team, so it’s gonna get a big turnout) in the same area at the same time.

The AFL finals series is just over an hour away from starting.
And I must say I’m pleased for my Hawks this year. Did better then I expected and I’m chuffed they finished in the top four.
That being said I don’t like their chances against the Tigers tonight. But you never know ... hoping Alistair Clarkson has something up his sleeve.

In an absolute boil over Collingwood has defeated Richmond to reach the Grand Final.
Richmond looked unstoppable all season in the defence of the premiership and have crashed the car on the final lap,

Well the 2018 AFL Grand Final is set.
The West Coast Eagles will take on the Collingwood Magpies.
And I think for the first time.. a player who is the United States will be playing (a Canadian has previously played so that’s why I did say American) .. Mason Cox who represents Collingwood.

And after a few seasons where there has been a romantic, sentimental choice to support, we have an NRL Grand Final between probably two of the colder, most ruthless teams in the league... #1-Sydney Roosters v #2-Melbourne Storm.

And here are the teams for the NRL Grand Final as they stand right now...
#1-Sydney Roosters
Tedesco Tupou Mitchell Manu Ferguson Keary Aubusson Waerea-Hargreaves Friend Taukeiaho Cordner Liu Radley --- Napa Tetevano Momirovski Matterson --- Emergencies: Collins, Butcher, O'Sullivan, Cronk
-----
#2-Melbourne Storm
Slater Vunivalu Chambers Scott Addo-Carr Munster Croft J. Bromwich C. Smith Glasby Kaufusi Stimson Finucane --- K. Bromwich Welch B. Smith Asofa-Solomona --- Emergencies: Hoffman, Hughes, Kasiano, Blair
I say as they stand because of two reasons... One, Melbourne fullback Billy Slater is fighting a shoulder charge... er... charge at judiciary tonight that, if not overturned, will see him miss what will be his final career game as he will be retiring at season's end. And two, regular Sydney halfback Cooper Cronk (who they had signed from Melbourne) is fighting a shoulder injury suffered in the qualifying final last weekend that will require off-season surgery, but he has been named in their emergencies squad none the less and if they think he's right to go, he'll come into the team.

The 2018 Brownlow winner is Tom Mitchell.. from my beloved Hawks. So I’m happy with that... and also I finally get a prediction right!

Billy Slater is cleared to play, he's been deemed not guilty of a shoulder charge.

Sorry must get a bit self indulgent here.
Today marks the 10 year anniversary of one of my favourite memories.. My brother and I attended the 2008 AFL Grand Final between Geelong and Hawthorn at the MCG. We were keen to go go.. cause it’s a Grand Final.. every AFL fan hopes to see their team compete at the biggest match of the year if they make it.
My brother and we’re silver members of the Hawthorn football club. It did not guarantee a ticket, but we could enter a ballot if the Hawks won their qualifying final. You don’t get to puck your seat or tier if you are successful in the ballot, you just hoped for a seat at the least and nothing that’s going to cost too much (that’s a risk, we learned a few years later). We got probably the cheapest seated tier and gorseats on the second last row of the Olympic Stand.
We thought there was a good chance that Geelong was going thump us that day. They did it to Port Adelaide the year before, they only lost one match all the 2008 season. But hey at least we get to attend. Hawthorn have this rep of always being there, but at the time this was our first Grand Final appearance in 17 years. I was 28 at the time, and 11 when Hawthorn’s last GF in 1991... so it was a small drought.
So the match started, the game was pretty even in the first half.. I thought at least we are in this game... but Geelong were slightly off.. they missing easy goals... remember Brad Ottes had a run into an open goal and then he lost he missed because he was putting on his shoe, and did not put it on properly. At the end of the second half I thought “we’re in this!”
And then the third quarter.. Cyril Rioli just exploded, Stuart Dew had an awesome five minutes, and everything was coming up Hawthorn.
The third quarter is often regarded as the premiership quarter and this time it was so true.. Hawthorn did not look back and Geelong was done. Hawthorn were 2018 premiers
.. such a great day..
Ok normal services may resume.

Qtr time Collingwood lead West Coast 31 to 14.
Magpies with the great start kicking 5 goals in a row, but Eagles kicked the last two to keep in touch.

The Magpies are hot out of the cage here, two quick goals at the return of play.
