I have a book recommendation:
A Sporting Chance by Titus O’Riley (nearly said O’Neil)
A book that looks back at Australian sporting scandals and why those involved are easily forgiven (by the sports media mostly) when joe public would never get away with it. Covers early sporting indentities, the cricket scandals, horse racing corruption, dodger multi millionaire sports club owners, and why a lot of trouble making sports stars transist into lucrative sports media careers post retirement.
A great read, with some good laughs.

In serious news North Melbourne ruckman Majak Daw is in hospital after it is believed to be he fell off the Bolte Bridge into the Yarra River. It’s not been confirmed but many news sources have added the lifeline number to the end of their articles, so it looks like a suicide attempt. It’s believed he is in a stable condition and injuries are not life threatening. I have been on that bridge a few times, it’s bloody high. Seriously you can see Marvel Stadium from it and it looks like you fit two of them underneath the road part of the bridge, It’s amazing he survived the fall. www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-18/majak-daw-afl-north-melbourne-kangaroos-player-hospital/10630078Wishing him all the best.

Well knock me down with a feather..
The AFL 2019 season bounces up tomorrow with the now traditional opener Richmond vs Carlton at the MCG.. sure Carlton have improved and will only be thrashed by 46 points.
Seriously I have put footy on a bit of back burner this year. Turning 40 next year and I’m in the process of planning a overseas trip with friends and family. But still footy is still a good love and while not optimistic on Hawthorn’s chances since our best player is out for the season, I still a little excited.
Ok I usually do predictions. But will be limited this year:
Premiers: Richmond (hate to say it, they will take no prisoner after they choked in the prelims) Brownlow: Dayne Zorko (Brisbane) Coleman: Lance Franklin (Sydney) Wooden Spooners: St Kilda

G✇JI☈A Why you going with St. Kilda & not Gold Coast for the Wooden Spoon? Coin toss, and with their injuries there is not a lot of depth.

Not long home from the new BankWest Stadium. What a place, total game changer. Parramatta now has the best stadium in the NRL.

Channel Nine has finally axed The Footy Show (AFL - Thursday) after shitty ratings after 8 episodes of a format change (basically be like Front Bar on Channel 7)
Ending a run that has lasted a quarter of a century.
Once considered essential viewing for AFL fans.. as it was one of the only shows at the time that had a comedic look at the sport. Channel 7 tried and failed a couple of times fo compete with them (4 Quarters and Live & Kicking) .. but then in the mid 2000’s Channel 10 got rights to air the AFL on Saturday’s and the Finals.. and they launched their own show late night AFL comedy show “After The Game” (later moved to prime time and name changed to Before The Game) hosted by sports journalists and actual comedians .. and it quickly made the The Footy Show look stale. Channel 10 axed Before The Game In 2013 after they lost the rights to the AFL matches
But other alternatives to the Footy Show emerged... the show’s on the cable channel Fox Footy... The Marngook Footy Show on ABC/SBS, several comedy themed podcasts... but the biggest rival to The Footy Show was emergence of what looked like a ad for beer. The Carlton Draught Friday Front Bar aired after the conclusion of the Friday Night game on channel 7 at about 10:45pm .. but it’s simple format got football fans to stick around and it did well in the ratings (or people fell asleep while watching the match and left the tv on), so moved it Thursday nights to compete with The Footy Show.
And that’s what led to the end of the long running show.
Although one aspect will survive.. the Sunday Morning version will continue.

Not to mention the NRL equivalent being canned at the end of last year, so it really is an end of an era.
Man, so much of that stuff is just f***ing weird to watch with 2019 eyes, especially the early years when they were riding the wave of the Priscilla boom, so just about every week one of them did a skit in drag. Not to mention the guy doing Indian brownface for the comedy news segment.

Hearing news (from The Age’s Real Footy social media) that North Melbourne head coach Brad Scott is set to leave the club on a mutual decision between him and the club after a disappointing season so far.

And Brendon Bolton has been sacked as Carlton coach.
When Bolts briefly coached the Hawks during Clarkson’s absence in 2014.. yeah I know, he was coaching a great team at the time, but i really thought I saw something promising in him as he coached the Hawks to 5 wins out of 5. In fact when Clarkson returned the Hawks lost first game back (it was that match were Brain Lake choked Drew Petrie)
Carlton are a shit show. They are the worst run club in the AFL. They sack a perfectly good coach, to get a legend, only to sack him when things don’t work out.. now they sack someone that was given a piece of shit to work with. Maybe it’s not the coaches that are the problem here.

Some news:
North Melbourne have promoted Rhyce Shaw from caretaker coach to full time head coach of the Kangaroos. Hopefully he has a better coaching career then his uncle Tony. And speaking of Premiership Sydney Swans players:
Swans veteran Jarrad McVeigh has announced his retirement after 17 years with the club. He is hoping for a farewell match before the end of season. Let’s hope he gets up from his recent nagging injuries.

AFL legend and trailblazer for indigenous Australians in the game Graham “Poll” Farmer has passed away 84 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. VALE
In other news a few notable retirements: Scott Thompson of North Melbourne will play the rest of the season. Aaron Sandilands of Fremantle, the big 7 footer will play the rest of the season too... I think he should go to Hollywood, he could play Frankenstein’s Monster with little make up.
And of course Jarryd Roughead. The big Hawthorn forward and cancer survivor will play his final match this Sunday at Marvel Stadium. We will leave with game with 4 Premierships, a Coleman Medal and many other accolades. And for being an all round swell guy.

GWS’s Brett Deledio has announced his retirement.
One of my worst calls was that he made a very smart move by moving from the Tigers to the Giants. The very next season the Tigers win the premiership.
