Should also mention that the NRL are playing empty stadiums until further notice. They’re apparently in a very precarious financial situation, so they can’t really afford for the comp to be cancelled or postponed.

So, will Gold Coast reprise their Wooden Spoon performance once again this year? They have all the tools needed to repeat it.

Word is that with state borders being closed here, the AFL is about to suspend their season one round in. NRL still stubbornly hanging on at the moment...
EDIT: Suspended for two months.

They just now suspended the season? Isn’t Australia getting ravaged with covid too? Yeah, we got all that too. There's even been one case literally in my home suburb, like. I can't really speak for AFL since I don't follow it that closely, but they were willing to play empty stadiums as long as they could, before the state governments started closing their borders. AFL has teams located in five of the six Australian states, and play games regularly in the one remaining state and both territories... It would have been unworkable. NRL meanwhile only has teams in three states and one territory, all on the eastern seaboard of the country (although they do have a team from New Zealand in the league... They've already committed to playing the whole season in Australia), plus they apparently have a VERY precarious financial situation that could see the entire competition collapse under any sort of long term suspension of the season. They basically live hand-to-mouth from their domestic broadcast deals... No games to broadcast, no money.

Well, here we go... the NRL has conceded defeat, and they too will suspend their season.

The NRL restarts tonight, with Parramatta v Brisbane first up on the re-configurated schedule.

The AFL returns tomorrow with Collingwood vs. Richmond at the MCG. Most games this weekend including that one will be behind closed doors, but the Port Adelaide/Adelaide game will have up to 2,240 fans in attendance, and both Greater Western Sydney/North Melbourne and Sydney/Essendon will have up to 350 fans.

Jeez if what Heretier Lumumba has stated about his time at Collingwood is true then that club was a disgrace during his time there.

Vale John Kennedy Snr
AFL and Hawthorn Legend. Hawthorn’s first premiership coach, coaching The Hawks to three premierships during his tenure there. Before Kennedy the coach.. Hawthorn were the whipping boys of the VFL (think like Carlton or Gold Coast from the previous decade), and Kennedy and his hard coaching style turned that around to become a powerhouse. Funfact: even though he credited to turning the Hawks around, he also still the most recent Hawthorn coach to have a wooden spoon for the 1965 season, although there was close call in 2004, The Hawks have not finished bottom of the ladder since then.
Of course there is his other legacies.. his son (John Junior) and grandson (Josh) have gone on to become premiership plays.
And who could forget his legendary “Do Something!” speech during a losing Grand Final. Yes I said losing. One of footy’s famous Mandela effects.. it’s often assumed that speech was apart of a a famous Hawthorn win.. no it was at the 1975 Grand Final were the Hawks lost to North Melbourne by 55 points.. imagine the spray post game... the Hawks made amends the next season by beating the Roos for the premiership.
And an interesting bit of timing because this weekend The Hawks are set to face the old rivals North Melbourne at Marvel on Sunday evening. Kennedy also coached the Kangaroos in the 70s and 80s.. so seems fitting these two teams will meet.
R.I.P

Well, the AFL schedule got absolutely ravaged by the second wave of COVID in the state of Victoria. 10 teams based in that state, more than half the league, have been made to relocate for the foreseeable to be able to try and complete a season.

Halfway through the COVID-interrupted NRL season now, the big stories seem to be the much-improved Penrith, Parramatta and Newcastle, all in the top four with perpetual contenders Melbourne (who are currently based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland because of Victoria having COVID-related difficulties)... And the absolute dog’s breakfast of a season that Brisbane are having. One of the long-time heavyweights of the comp, they sit 14th of 16 with a 3-7 record, but those seven losses include a lot of blowouts against them.

It’s not been reported in the press, but it’s pretty clear that Shane Tuck took his own life. There is a law here that suicides are not be reported by the news media so it does not encourage copycats. While the intentions are good, I think it’s flawed because it underreports the problem. And the only people that get reported are famous people with that skirted around reporting.. where you only know it’s suicide if the reports end the Lifeline phone number. Anyway after saying that, I don’t mean it to look satirical. But here is the Life Australia phone number if you need it: 13 11 14 New Zealanders: Need to Talk 1737 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines
