Avoiding the politics of the issue, I have considered it, but I have not because it would make some of my relatives uncomfortable.

It's still a politic dude.
No. The topic of ownership, responsibility, licensing and what someone carries is not political in and of itself. If people get into debating the second amendment or the laws surrounding open/concealed carry then it becomes political. The thread is fine, IMO. Every non-American here (and even half of all American's) would disagree.

I will one day, just haven't done it yet.
In the mean time, I will just continue killing Yaks with my mind bullets.

I'm probably gonna apply for NRA membership in a bit. Anyone here involved with that and have some pros or cons?

Keeping a gun safely stored for home defence is fine. Walking around carrying one on you just strikes me as ego driven paranoia. I think you're painting a very board stroke on people who carry. I don't have an ego and I'm not paranoid. The fact of the matter is that no matter where you live or go bad things will happen, it's just a fact of life. I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world. And going by your paranoid comment you could say that about people who have alarms in their car or house or who take martial arts for self defense.

I've luckily never been in a situation where I felt threatened enough to need one and hopefully I never am. If I applied for one and they gave me a license I would lose all faith in humanity and the mental evaluation process.

Thinking about buying one of these for self-defense purposes only

I don't live in a particularly dangerous area (thankfully) so the self-defense thing doesn't apply to me, but I can see why it would to someone who lives in an American city for sure. I would love to own a hunting rifle and hunt my own food, but there's not much real 'game' over here so the local farmers might start to get pissed off at me shooting their cows and chickens. Or I could take it into the supermarket and fire into the frozen section but I don't think that really counts.

Generally I do, especially when 1- the alarms are oversensitive and go off even with a stiff breeze, 2) the car in question is a piece of shit that not even a thief would bother to rob and 3- people allow the alarms to drone on for a half hour before bothering to switch them off. There are threats in the world? Yes there are. You've a better chance of dying by falling down your stairs than being a victim of a violent assault. You may as well argue in favour of wearing body armour, just in case.

I don't need a gun because you'd think I was a M-80 with how fast I'm spitting out bars.

But I think the effectiveness of martial arts of self defense or car/house alarms have been fairly well established at helping people stay safe and alive and accidental misuse of these things rarely result in death. Carrying a fire arm, depending on your region, unfortunately can't make the same boast. Especially in relation to its effectiveness as self-defense option. The "better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it" thought process is one I generally subscribe to, but with the caveat of, "if the odds of me needing are less than 1%, then I don't really need it."

I don't understand the need for guns at all. But then I'm from a culture that does not have guns in the hands of the general public.

No....living with my parents, guns aren't allowed.
But if I did own my own house...I would strongly consider having a gun as self-defense hiding somewhere.
