What a couple of idiots. Everyone knows that you "accidentally" hit the ref when there's action or a big pileup near him, you don't just blatantly target him like that. What a couple of rank amateurs.

That was pretty blatant, especially the second one that had to dive to hit him on the ground. I bet there are plenty of people supporting their actions, however, and that is really f***ing sad.

From Fox 4 Dallas:
A San Antonio School district is investigating after a football player ran into the back of a referee watching a play and another player then dove into the official after he fell. Both players were ejected from the game. Pascual Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Northside Independent School District, told The Associated Press that video of the incident was "extremely disturbing." Gonzalez said the district is investigating and will hold a due process hearing with interviews with game officials, coaches and students. "It is not the good sportsmanlike behavior that we teach students," he said. The team from John Jay High School in San Antonio was playing Marble Falls High School in Marble Falls, located about 90 miles north of San Antonio. Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays. The incident occurred with approximately a minute left in Friday's game, according to Marble Falls coach Matt Green. Marble Falls was trying to run out the clock and called for a handoff toward the left side of the line of scrimmage, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The penalties stemming from the incident gave Marble Falls a first down. John Jay lost 15-9. Marble Falls coach Matt Green said John Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game. "I've coached 14 years and I've never seen anything like it," Green said. Video showed the referee watching the play, and his head snapping back when he is leveled from behind. The other player then dove on top of him. The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told the AP. Elliott said he was seeking guidance from the state officials association, adding, "the first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again." He declined to release the referee's name. The University Interscholastic League, which governs Texas high schools sports, is working with the school district and officials on the investigation, according to spokeswoman Kate Hector.

The ref wanted to press charges? This will be the easiest assault case in Texas for years.

I am curious to learn why the two John Jay players were ejected prior to the referee getting attacked, and if there's a history of misconduct from the team. Definitely not excusing the pair that blindsided the ref, but if you can find a pattern of bad behavior then the entire program should have some kind of consequence.

And they give European footballers shit for supposedly being disrespectful to the ref? This sort of thing is really unprecedented, as everyone knows you don't attack an official. These wo were suspended from school and will probably have riminal actions brought up against them. I don't know what goes on in European leagues, but this certainly isn't an indictment of how players treat refs typically.

Over here footballers don't do the hits with quite the same force and aggression, and the officials don't take the falls as well either. Observe

I live very close to Jay High School. I have a few friends who went there who went on to succeed, but this school is notoriously known for bad things (including having one of the highest teen pregnancy/HIV rates in the US in the 90s). Suffice to say, it's not exactly an ideal school to send your kids to.
That said, I hope they throw the book at these punks. Ban them from further high school sports competition, and from college sports as well. If either of them is 18, prosecute them as adults.
Everyone is talking about this over here, and it's a disgrace. These thugs should be treated as such and taken to the cleaners.

I'm hearing that one of the players, Moreno, was kept in the game for the last play and dove at the QB who was taking a knee.
Get these two shitstains out of here.

It looked like they were going to sandwich him but the first guy hit a second too early.
I hope that ref is alright and those bastard kids get a nasty punishment.

Listening to the radio the kids are age 15 and 17. There are allegations the referee used racial slurs against a player that was eject previous and that is what led to this happening. This is supposedly on tape but cannot be released because we criminal criminal case going on. The referee is threatening a lawsuit for libel or slander or if anything of that nature gets put in the press is well. There's also allegations of one of the assistant coaches for the San Antonio team telling these kids that referee had to be taken out for what he did.

League officials have said the high school needs to take a look at its football program.
“There were multiple ejections, punches thrown throughout the game, trash-talking and unsportsmanlike conduct,” said Gil Garza, a member of the league’s state executive committee. He added that the players also clenched their fists as they lined up to shake hands with members of the opposing team after the game.
“I didn’t see any leadership coming from the coaching staff,” Mr. Garza added.
