The University of Georgia: every season. Honorable mention: Notre Dame 2012-13. They struggled against some mediocre teams(and should have lost to Pitt) but for some reason people still pretended like they were world beaters. Enter Alabama. Manti Te'o meet Eddie Lacey. They still made the national championship game, which should count for something. Unlike the preseason #1 that year USC...

2007 New England Patriots. Showed up at the Superbowl just expecting to win. The media expected them to win, the experts expected them to win. I don't think they were overhyped considering their performances over the course of that season. They dominated, put up incredible numbers each week and went 18-0 until a miracle play stops them from achieving perfection. Although they didn't win the Superbowl, I think it's very harsh to say they were both overhyped and failed to deliver. It's quite refreshing how during the past couple of tournaments, expectations in this country have become more realistic. If the Hodgson era achieves nothing else, at least it has lessened our unobtainable ambitions!

2007 Mets: The 2006 team nearly beat the Cardinals in the NLCS but fell short. Basically kept the same team and lost the division on the last day of the season thanks to an uncharacteristically bad performance by Glavine. All went downhill from there until what appears to be this year.

Ending all expectations, so the disappointment is less hard to take when he inevitably fails.

Clemson every year too. Don't think you can hang the overhyped label on ND for 2012. They were unranked preseason by the AP and #24 by the Coaches poll. The T'eo Heisman hype was a bit much I guess, but there wasn't really any place for them to go besides the championship game after a 12-0 season. The year after that? Sure. Preseason #11, two of their losses were to Michigan and Pittsburgh. Settled for the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers.

would it be fair to say the 2011-2012 Liverpool team? Mainly just because of how overhyped most of their signings were (including Andy Carroll from the winter transfer window)

2011 Boston Red Sox. That was a great baseball season for schadenfreude. They cleaned up 2 years later. It's just a shame injuries continue to plague their roster. Still, Big Papi is 2 home runs away from 500 and John Farrell was recently diagnosed with cancer, though he said that it's completely curable as they caught it early.

All went downhill from there until what appears to be this year. The really sad thing about 2007 is that the writing should've been on the wall so much earlier; they dominated in April and May, then played under .500 every month (except August, when they were maybe 2 games over it) to the end of the season. Minaya just had no clue how to construct a roster 1-25 and still maintain a decent enough farm system in case he needed reinforcements for injuries and whatnot. God, I still remember Sports Illustrated picking the Mets to win it all in 2009.

Mainly just because of how overhyped most of their signings were (including Andy Carroll from the winter transfer window) They did at least have some good cup success that season, winning the League Cup and making the FA Cup final. Their form in the League though was very poor, and they of course had the whole Suarez racism issue. They certainly had some highs and lows in that season.

They were still a really good team, but prior to the 2006 National Championship game, ESPN ran a series of vignettes putting the 2005-06 USC Football team against some of the greatest college teams of all time, essentially saying they were one of the greatest teams ever.
USC went on to lose the National Championship game against Texas.

Did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers go 8-0 one year and finish 8-8? If so, them.
Also The Kansas City Chiefs every year, basically everything in Kansas period except ironically The Royals right now.

1988 Florida State. Entered the year ranked #1, and immediately loses 31-0 to hated rival Miami.
Went on to win the rest of their games and finish ranked #4, which made the opening loss even worse.

That one team led by Peyton Manning that dominated the regular season, was everybody's shoe-in for the Superbowl and they lost in the first or second round.

Almost every College Football preseason top ten team ever. Notable examples:
91 FSU. Preseason darlings, won their first few then started the wide right saga vs Miami
07 Georgia, though to be fair the polls bumped them down despite them winning and USC not playing in week three. Georgia eventually lost some games just for good measure
Notre Dame 14 Ohio st 08 Bama take your pick Oklahoma take your pick Texas A&M 2011 (four 20 pt leads lost to top 15 teams)

2007 Michigan. All the seniors were coming back to give the Wolverines their biggest run in ages, preparing many for what looked to be the year they take the National Championship. Then Appalachian State pulled the biggest upset in College Football history in week 1, and the dream died there. Never made the Top 5 ever again. Don't remind me.

The Ovechkin-era Capitals. No matter who they have, no matter how hot they've been over the season, they can just never make the conference finals.

This years White Sox were supposed to be a threat to win the division, with the additions of Robertson, (hometown boy) Samardzija and Melky Cabrera. Samardzija averages two bad innings a game, Cabrera (or anybody else) couldn't hit water if they fell into Lake Michigan for the first two months, etc.
Now they're fighting Detroit (another "contender" this year) to stay out of last.

San Jose Sharks: For about 5-6 years following the Thornton tade, that year was supposed to be the year the Sharks finally get over the hump. I feel you on this. It was almost a relief not making the playoffs last year; that was a sign it was time to retool. Probably the worst was when we won the President's Trophy only to lose in the first round. To the Ducks. Also the 1993-94 Seattle Supersonics. With Jordan retired, they looked like the next dynasty (and Shawn Kemp a first-ballot Hall of Famer), but then they lost in the first round to the Nuggets.
