X-PAC jumping was a huge moment, because it showed that even though WCW was on top at the time, some people would still rather be in WWF, and sort of proved they weren't defeated yet.
But overall, I'd say Shawn Michaels, and I don't even like the guy. He's one of my all time least favorites. But as others stated, he really kickstarted the Attitude era, and Triple H would have been nothing without him. Well, maybe not nothing, but certainly not what he became.

X-pac by default.
Shawn was essentially done by the time wrestling had gotten to it's most mainstream peak in 1998. And to be fair, he was either injured or in a shitty role for most of 1997. His D-X stuff was here and gone in the grand scheme of things.
And Triple H? Eh...I'd still say that's sort of a package deal with Chyna. It's kinda interesting looking back at how much of a forgettable role he served outside of his feuds with Rock. I liked him, but I didn't exactly ever place him very high in the MNW...probably the 6th tier best guy on WWF's side...at best.

Michaels was the best wrestler in the world at this point, and the only real major player in the WWF at the time. If he had left for WCW when he was threatening to do so, WWF would have been hooped. The pressure got to him, and he went haywire for most of his relationships, it seems. Bret couldnt have led the company against the meta realism that the NWO was bringing. What was he going to do? Call them "Scum"? Hall, Nash and if Michaels was with them, would have had a field day with poor ol Bret.

Without the DX tank, none of us would be here right now.

It's Triple H, both versions of DX and the early days of McMahon/Helmsley he was the guy

Honestly without chyna, triple h was bland and corny. And she was a major part of his gimmick and directly affected the majority of his matches.
Road dogg and x-pac made dx cool again.

Gotta be HBK. He protected the company and it's title's prestige by refusing to do the j.o.b. for years. When he finally handpicked his successor, his dropping of the title singlehandedly created a boom period so big he was able to take a 4 year vacation.

It's HBK for all the wrong reasons. His run on top was terrible for business and drove viewers away to WCW. He sabotaged people's careers who could have potentially helped the WWF when it was at its lowest point and his male stripper gimmick was not popular and when you compared that to the exciting nWo angle, yeah, it was crap.
