I'd say try to stay away from NFL busts, but who are some of the bigger prospects in sports that didn't live anywhere near the expectations placed on them? Just to make it a little easier, we'll put the begin date of 2000.
I remember it wasn't long ago the top prospects 3 prospects in baseball were Delmon Young, Jeremy Hermida, and Jeff Francouer. None of the 3 ever lived up to that billing.
In soccer, AC MIlan a few years ago banked their youth system around Alexander Merkel and Rodney Strasser... especially Merkel. Merkel was then used to get Stephen El Sharaawry and was then sold to Udinese from Genoa. Merkel didn't impress while on loan with Watford and is now a squad player with Grasshopper.
And as a Miami Dolphin fan... gotta say Dion Jordan is on his way.
So other candidates?

Greg Oden: Never stayed healthy enough to play many games. And when he did play, he was lackluster. Freddy Adu: Was suppose to be the next big Soccer star in the US. Never even came close to that. Rick DiPietro: #1 pick for the Islanders in 2000. Was good for a while, then got injured and never recovered. What's more depressing is that 1. The Islanders traded away Roberto Luongo in favor of him, and 2. Their city rivals the Rangers got Henrik Lundqvist in the same draft.

Kwame Brown - The first sign that Michael Jordan's talent evaluation wasn't the best, especially when Pau Gasol was taken 3rd. Darko - The only guy taken in the top 6 of a great draft that didn't even make an All Star Game. Hell he never became a regular starter. Andrea Bargnani - A 7 foot center who can't rebound. Adam Morrison - Another great pick by Michael Jordan.
The 2013 NFL Draft Class - There have been some very good players from the class (Sheldon Richardson, Eric Reid, Eddie Lacy, Leveon Bell, Eifert, Trufant, Keenan Allen, Kelce), but holy crap that class was terrible.
Matt Bush - He's Matt f***ing Bush!

The Darko thing pisses me off soooo much as a Pistons fan. Even as a kid, I knew Carmelo was gonna be awesome and then JD decides to pick Darko because..? Granted they won the title that season, but they might have been better once their dominance in the east started to fade and had a seasoned Melo taking the reigns in 09/10.

Granted they won the title that season, but they might have been better once their dominance in the east started to fade and had a seasoned Melo taking the reigns in 09/10. On the other side, the big problem there to remember is that Larry Brown has always been notorious for not trusting rookies and killing their confidence. If you say talent wouldn't matter, then the smoking gun is that Brown DID coach Carmelo on the 2004 Olympic team, and they hated each other there for many of those reasons. It's not even just "If the Pistons pick Carmelo, they lose the 2004 title"...but may be going as far as saying: If the Pistons picked Carmelo Anthony in 2003, we're probably saying now "Okay, sure Darko was just another Chris Kaman-type...but really? The Pistons HAD to pick that stiff Carmelo over Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh? Was his run in the NCAAs that blinding to them, or did Brown owe Jim Boeheim a favor?"

No, in terms of bust, Jamarcus Russell wipes the floor in anything and everything RGIII failed at. Russell made 60 million dollars to start 7 games in his NFL career, and somehow found a way to blow it all. So he's a bust on the field and a disappointment off the field.

Yeah I'm challenging that Greg Oden being lackluster when he played. Oden showed plenty of promise when he played. Special before the last injury in Portland

Even Darko and Kwame Brown had shown some promise when they got regular playing time too, but they're both undeniably busts even with it.

Hasheem Thabeet - most of the NBA players named have showed some skill in basketball even if one dimensional. Thabeet can't even play.

The sad thing about Adu is that he's actually playing well NOW... while on the 13th team of his pro career.

Russell made 60 million dollars to start 7 games in his NFL career, and somehow found a way to blow it all. So he's a bust on the field and a disappointment off the field. He had one good season, got hurt really bad in that good season and never bounced back. Disappointment and for what WA gave the Rams to draft him. The Rams won hands down. Speaking of wish I'm adding a few to the NFL List. 1. Sam Bradford to the list. He was brought in and had this hype of being the savior of the Rams. They he take this team to the play offs and have winning seasons. Instead never finished .500 or better when healthy. Hardly had a season that he stayed healthy. He showed some flashes of being very good but consistent from one week to another hasn't. It's at best Mid of the pack when it comes to starters but not even close to being what he was hyped as being one of the elite. He was a number one Pick and what has he shown us to be that? 2. Matt Leinart: People went crazy that Warner came in and took his job. Warner retires and he fails to even come close to what Warner was doing in AZ. Best he did was become a backup and now out of the NFL. 3. Tim Tebow: For all the hype he got since he was drafted. People went crazy when Denver brought in Payton. When sure I get for making the playoff I got it. Now after what it been 3 teams brought him in and did nothing for either of them. For all that hype he was a flash in the pan. 4. Matt Flynn: Had a big game while starting for a hurt Rogers. Everyone brought into his hype from that on. Teams went into a biding war for him that off season. Turned into a flop and become nothing.

I'm not being deliberately contrary but I'd actually suggest Tebow is the complete opposite to a bust. I'd say he is an overachiever in the NFL. He was a surprise 1st Round draft pick, had no business going so high, had no mechanics to be an NFL QB and had no accuracy, yet he still managed to guide a team to the playoffs (albeit with a lot of help) and win a playoff game with one of the most memorable plays that will always be remembered. And, if my memory serves me correct, Tebow seemed to have very little support from Elway during that period, he seemed to desperately want him out of Denver. And honestly, I thought he looked the best he has ever been during this pre-season with Philly. He was throwing the ball nicely and actually looked like a genuine quarterback at times. I thought he was very unlucky not to make it to 53 man roster.
