Speaking of Florida, the 1996 Florida Panthers. Trapped and Beezered their way to the SCF. They got swept, but at least they pushed the Avs to triple OT in the series clinching game.

2003 Carolina Panthers.
Had shown some improvement in Year 1 under John Fox, but then struggled in week 1 against Jacksonville. Desperate, John Fox goes to the bench and puts in an unheralded quarterback named Jake Delhomme. The rest, as they say, was history.

2013 Red Sox: Anyone who says that they knew that team would make the playoffs, nevermind win the World Series is a flithy liar

1994-95 New Jersey Devils. Got into the playoffs as a 5 Seed and no one gave them any real chance against the dominant Red Wings. Then they swept them.

The 1995-96 Syracuse basketball team. Probably my favorite single season team ever. Started the season really strong then faltered for a bit, but once they got into the NCAA tournament they were just magical. I really wish that they could have beaten Kentucky.

The 2008 Tampa Bay Rays.
To that point, the former Devil Rays were a nothing franchise that had consistently lost for ten years. They rebranded that offseason and added a few quality players to their young, developing roster. Still, nobody on the national stage seemed to pay any attention until around the All-Star break, and even after that there were a lot of doubters. There was actually quite a bit of hype locally before the season started, but not even the most optimistic Rays fans picked them to win the American League pennant like they did. Anyone who bet on the Rays had access to a DeLorean and some plutonium.

Denmark winning the 1992 European Championships.
Although they had some great players like Peter Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup they were still huge underdogs for that tournament. They didn't even qualify for the tournament originally, Denmark were brought in as a late replacement for Yugoslavia who had to withdraw due to the civil war.
Similarly Greece came from nowhere to win the 2004 European Championships, beating Portugal in the final in Lisbon. I don't think many expected them to even get out of the group phase.

Alan Kulwicki in the 1992 NASCAR season. Driving for his own team with only around 40 employees and beating the powerhouse teams of the sport to end up winning the championship.

The Boston Braves had been perennial losers and in July 1914 were in last place in the National League but then over the last couple of months went on a tear and went 70-19 to win the pennant by 10.5 games. They then beat the Philadelphia A's in 4 games winning the World Series. The Braves would not win another pennant until 1948.

Euro 2016 qualifiers Northern Ireland. Seriously, look at our last 15 years. Been to all but 3 home games in those 15 years so I know how bad it's been, look at our team, look at the pool we can draw from and tell me it isn't a near miracle what we did in qualifying. #notbrazilnorniron

It's been an amazing effort. At least Wales have a genuine world class player they can call upon, no disrespect but Kyle Lafferty is not quite in that category

The year the Twins were penciled in for contraction, didn't they win the division and the next two?

This year's Yankees. The best they were projected to finish is fourth, so to be in it for the division for so long, let alone make the playoffs, was a long shot. But being the Yankees, they will get no credit for it.
