Todd Van Poppel Lawrence Phillips Pavel Brendl Greg Oden
Just a couple of names who didn't develop due to various reasons.
Alexandre Daigle Bo Kimble Ryan Leaf Peter Warrick
The list can go on and on. Who did you think was going to be a star or HUGE star but didn't pan out.
I have to say Dajuan Wagner for anyone that wonders, could've been a hell of a tag team partner with LeBron James.

Freddie Adu by a long way. The guy was hailed as the next Pele and the saviour of American soccer and yet never came close to fulfilling his potential and more noted for opening nightclubs these days.

JaMarcus Russell
Dude had all the physical talent in the world. It seemed that once he got that signing bonus he just shut it down.

How in the world did Lawrence Phillips not become awesome? Good pick in OP.
Adam Morrison was a college basketball phenom. I've easily seen way over 50 of his games during his tenure. I think his basketball bi-polarism is the culprit, but I would've bet on the "he's going to toughen up" side of that to prevail. And don't give me that "he played in a weaker league" crap. Plenty of mid-major talents have excelled. The guy was seriously out of this world unreal in so many games. Skill set off the charts. The guy was his own worst enemy. Baffles me.

John Wallace. I seriously thought that he had the skills and intangibles to be a perennial All Star in the NBA but it just never happened.

Some of my choices are personal and a bit more obscure, but here they are:
MLB: There's a running joke in my keeper-league fantasy baseball league that just about any time a prospect is discussed, someone cracks wise and mentions my name and former Padres third baseman Sean Burroughs in the same breath, because I was so enamored with him back in the early 2000s and spent serious draft capital to lock him up. I thought for sure that he was going to become the next big thing in Major League Baseball, a .330 hitter with power to boot. Well, his career peaked in 2003, when he hit .286 with seven home runs and 58 RBI in 146 games. He was out of the big leagues for good from 2007 through 2011 when he had cups of coffee with the Diamondbacks and Twins.
NBA: On this very forum, I wrote that DeJuan Blair, a power forward from Pitt, would be "a nasty beast of an undersized power forward" and said that he and Blake Griffin were the only two players in the 2009 NBA Draft who stood out to me as sure things. I may have even made a comparison to Charles Barkley while watching the NCAA Tournament that spring. I thought he was a viable top-five pick. Needless to say, he fell to 37th overall in the Draft and while he's still kicking around the Association with the Wizards, he never averaged double-digit points or rebounds in his six-year NBA career.
NFL: Somewhere floating around deep in the annals of the interwebs is a blog of me just absolutely gushing about linebacker Aaron Curry. I thought he was going to be the next great linebacker of our generation, a combination of LaVarr Arrington and Ray Lewis. I couldn't have been more wrong. Despite being taken fourth overall in the 2009 NFL Draft (three picks too low, I thought), Curry never became much of anything, posting career highs in tackles (73) and sacks (3.5) in 2010, then playing in a total of 18 games over the next three years before retiring in 2013 after being released by the Giants in training camp.

every Mets prospect in between David Wright and Matt Harvey.
Lastings Milledge Fernando Martinez Ike Davis Mike Carp Mike Pelfrey (had a decent season, but never will be an all star)
Probably missing a lot more names too.

Sports Illustrated missed the mark a little bit with this one.

Joe Borchard still owns the record for longest HR hit by a White Sox player at US Cellular Field.
James Baldwin (not the actor) was a good pitcher...who could never figure out the fourth inning.

I thought Sean Rodriguez would be an All Star power-hitting middle infielder when the Rays traded Scott Kazmir for him. He's still in the league, but he managed only to become a part-time player.
After his very first MLB game, I said Jason Heyward was "the next Ken Griffey, Jr." He's still very good, but he's no Griffey.
I also believed Jair Jurrjens would fulfill all of his potential, but then injuries happened.
And going back to that 2006 prospects list... Brandon Wood. Never have I seen such a great minor league player become so terrible the second he reached the major leagues. I've even seen him referred to as the worst MLB player ever. If that's not true, it's pretty close.

MLB Rick Ankel. He spend a ton of times with the Cardinals going from top pitching prospect who everyone thought would be a feature ace. Comes up and starts pitching like Rick Vaughin (Before the glasses) it was weird because he started out fine but then lost all control of the ball. So Cardinals sent him down and for a few years still couldn't get it, the changed to outfielder. He did ok in the Majors. But give the Cardinals a lot of credit for sticking with the guy for so long trying to get him on the team some way. I never seen a team put so much time in one guy but he never became the star everyone thought he was.
Another former Cardinal Cody Reamus: He had this hype that he was going to be an amazing outfielder and hitter. Was he horrible? No. But he wasn't amazing either. He still in the majors and is going ok but he not a Star like people expected him to be.
