I'll start with J.R./Isaiah Rider.
What a gifted scorer but what a knucklehead. Here's an old story from something I'm reading up on right now:
Who were your talented yet stubborn or hot headed athletes that never got it?

Before his untimely death, Chris Henry couldn't keep himself out of trouble.

Ron Artest/Metta World Peace is someone who was always a knucklehead with his most knucklehead moment coming during the Malice in the Palace. The fans share some of the blame but if Artest doesn't go into the stands and attacks the fan the brawl never happens. What makes it worse is that Artest attacked the wrong fan.

Justin Blackmon lost an extremely promising NFL career and set the Jaguars back by not being able to say no to weed. Josh Gordon is close to doing the same but I am not ready to write him off just yet.

Aaron Hernandez is the poster boy for this. He's given chance after chance at the University of Florida and with the Patriots because of his incredible talent and ability, he signed a five-year, $40 million contract, he was well on his way to being one of the best tight ends in the NFL, and he completely pissed it all away and is spending the rest of his life in prison.

I don't want to get in a big ballyhoo about it, but what really grinds my gears about atheletes and weed is that they are getting paid very well and have only a limited career span (3-10 years). Heck, when I was younger I had to quit smoking for jobs and I was getting paid much much much less than they were.

It's legal in the MLB (illegal in the MILB but nonetheless) and virtually legal in the NHL and NBA. In a sport that relies so much on guys being in pain all the time, the fact that they test it so heavily is ridiculous beyond measure. One of the 40923492349 things wrong with the NFL. Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury are two names that comes to mind The Marbury that earns a pretty fair living in China and is basically a God there?

Until 2011 the Busch brothers in NASCAR; Kurt was pretty much blacklisted from the sports' top teams and Kyle had the Ron Hornaday incident at Texas which nearly got him banned from the sport altogether.

Jeff George would be my pick. Guy was gifted, but never really buckled down and got serious about practice or his game. I'm not saying he was an elite talent, but he could have been so much more than he was. Just thinking when the Bears signed him a couple of years ago and he looked at that as rehabilitating his career shows what kind of damage he did.

Mario Balotelli
He's got talent, but unfortunately has no brain.

Paul Gascoigne.
One of the most talented footballers that Britain has ever produced. Yet his love for alcohol and an unhealthy lifestyle completely ruined him. In he end he finished his career as a wasted talent, and left everyone wondering just how great he could have been.

Mario Balotelli He's got talent, but unfortunately has no brain. on that note, Luis Suarez I dunno, Suarez seems to be moments of madness, that's how he's at one of the best clubs in the world playing every week and they want him. Balotelli's just crazy to the point no one really wants him. At best, he's like an abusive partner "we can change him".

Tod Marinovic. Granted his father's methods repressed him and he got out in the world and was unprepared for freedom and making his own choices.
Johnny Manziel...nuff said

Johnny Manziel...nuff said I think the Marinovich Project covered it pretty well. He was beaten over the head with football all his life. In the end, he didn't want to be good at football, he wanted an escape from football. I don't th ink him being a knucklehead messed up his shot at being a good QB, because he even said he didn't really have any football aspirations after the Giants game and what his dad said to him.

Just thinking when the Bears signed him a couple of years ago and he looked at that as rehabilitating his career shows what kind of damage he did. To be fair to Jeff George, he played behind a really shitty Colts offensive line (that seems to be a theme for the franchise since moving to Indy, but he played behind the nadir of offensively bad offensive lines). He did better away from Indy, but he was such an inflamed asshole that he wore out his welcome everywhere he went.
