People like to blame the fact that even if refs get the call wrong in the first place, they can go back and make it right with a review. The problem is that refs now don't even know the most basic of rules. We've seen instances were officials forgot what down it is. They're just terrible now. No excuses.

The fact that Roger Goodell and Dean Blandino (Head VP of Officiating in the NFL) actually disagree on this is amazing. You have Roger admitting there is an issue and something needs to be done (which is a shocker as he never sees anything wrong with the SHIELD) while Deano is adamant that the refs aren't actually messing up more, we're just seeing more and there is nothing to fix.
They need to go full Bellichick and let everything be reviewable, especially since they are cramming new refs on the field in near record numbers every year. I don't care if it slows down the game, I want to my team isn't getting screwed.

You cannot give unlimited challenges, not at all. Either give them 3 overall or the 2+1 method and open it up for something like the PI call from the Denver/NE being up for review for example. Keep the under 2:00 goes to the booth but make game ending or extending plays automatically reviewed no matter what they are (like the phantom facemask would be reviewed since it extended the game).

When a Clemson player gets ejected for targeting, and then an Iowa player does pretty much the exact same thing on a different play, but not a peep about it, then it's time for Targeting to get revised or eliminated.
Yes, I know they are all about safety now. But it's getting ridiculous. It's ruining the game. These guys know the dangers of the game.

I think instant replay spoiled the referees, because it allowed them to make more bad calls because they have an opportunity to correct them.

there's too many rules in football. they should really let the game be more fluid and only call something when it's really egregious. often I feel that I'm trying to understand international copyright law while watching a football game.
And the obligatory: #WhatIsACatch?

Yes, I know they are all about safety now. But it's getting ridiculous. It's ruining the game. These guys know the dangers of the game.Targeting is at the discretion of the referee. They have to try and distinguish between hitting the head accidentally and aiming for the head. But it isn't any more than different referees having calling pass interference more/less. On your second point, with all due respect, that is total bullshit. Only maybe boxing was more dangerous than football in terms of post-sport quality of life. If you think that they should cut corners on safety for your entertainment, maybe you should just stop watching the sport.

In some cases, the refs deserve a break. Honestly, we're not on the field, and we have the advantage of instant replay from 20 different angles. It's a lot different down on the actual field than it is on tv.
But I agree that they have made things way to ridiculously complex.

I want to toss something out there: A ref is supposed to watch the equivalent of a Human Car Crash, make highly accurate snap decisions about everything all the while filtering it through a Rulebook that makes your head spin. At the same time millions of people are watching the same game in High Def with multiple angles and instant replays for even the most mundane plays. If something is noticed, somebody will spend time crafting an argument and posting the split second video online where millions of sports fans laugh and say "LOL REF'S SUCK, HOW COULD YOU NOT SEE THAT" The ONLY way to "fix" the Ref problem is to have multiple refs with instant replay stations reviewing every single aspect of every single play. And my god does that sound shitty. Can you at least make the situation better? I'm sure you can. I'm just not paid enough right now to solve the NFL's problems EDIT: So I just looked at the NFL rules for a bit and I feel like I now know less about Football. Refs in the NFL suddenly feel like if cops only had the split second they catch a criminal to write up their charge. There's like 3 god damn pages just on Time Outs!

I also agree with the last 2 posts. How many times are there plays and reviews, and people and the announcers come to one conclusion. And then they show ONE new angle, and everybody sees the ball touch the ground or someone step out of bounds, and it's concrete evidence? That happens CONSTANTLY. So even with multiple cameras and slow motion replay, and damn-near a complete zoomed 360 degree shots of the play, people get it wrong all the time until that last shot.
Yeah, the refs aren't great and they do interject themselves at times I wish they wouldn't. But overall, I do think they do as well of a job as can be expected. The problem is that the NFL needs to go to a more collegiate-like review process, where any play can be called in from the booth and reviewed. But they don't want that, mainly because they hate overruns. I was just thinking Sunday about how crazy it is that all these early games start at noon (Central time), and how almost all of them are at halftime at 1:30 on the dot. I'm thinking the NFL would be greatly against a college style replay system mainly because of that.

Refs are getting worse now I still stand by my thought that the refs need to have a valid definition of targeting. Everyone of them seems to have a different definition of what it is. And it's not working.
