I was actually enjoying the review until he started doing that. The skits/cutaways suck and he just can't deal with that. He's not as clever as he thinks when it comes to writing sketches. He and his actors just simply aren't funny performers. Combine that with the unfunny writing and it's just...bad. Just corny ass humor. He's not willing to admit Demo Reel was a bad idea and just sucks. Honestly I don't see it being long until he just flat out pulls the plug on everything because people don't understand his "creative genius". I don't know, he sort of admits it in the review that Demo Reel was a misstep. I don't get the hate for this so much, I thought the ending tied it together really well. Yes, he criticizes his old stuff (and, to be honest, most of his old was bad both as critique and as comedy), but I thought the ending really tied the overall arc together with the movie's abysmal theme about trying something new and peer pressure.

Had trouble playing the video, but luckily Doug posted it on youtube.
Doug is way off the mark. This has nothing to do with us not liking new things. It's because reviews entirely made up of skits aren't really reviews. Doug's skits are kind hit and miss. So when they miss, the episodes get bad(especially when they are the focal point).
Which also is why it seemed weird that he's admitting that demo reel didn't work.

He's also been very childish at times with how he handles criticism of the skits.

My parents absolutely love "Christmas With the Kranks", something I still don't entirely understand. Other Christmas movies do everything it does a lot more effectively. Not to mention it's the 6000000th Christmas movie with Tim Allen, and inexplicably features both Jane Kaczmarek AND Erik Per Sullivan. It's one of those things I have to kinda turn off my mind to watch since it's been a yearly "tradition" in our house for a while. I'm not sure why, nor will I ask.
That being said, I haven't watched one of Doug's (recent) videos in a while and I have to agree that the changes aren't the greatest. What brought me back to his older videos were his no-nonsense observations and reactions to what he was reviewing, so I never really cared for much of the extra stuff.
That being said, I would have expected him to be a better sport about the changes/criticism instead of going on the offensive --- then again, producers expressing frustration with their fanbase happens so often with other internet series that it doesn't surprise me very much anymore.

How many of his recent videos are taking shots at people who don't like the skit? Seems like every other video has a shot at the audience.
It'd be one thing if he carried on and did the skits, I'm more annoyed about the whining at this point.
Everyone on the internet gets crap about their content, they either take those views into account and modify what they're making, or carry on doing what they want, not complaining about it.
Even if you like the skits, I can't see him bitching about people who are mean to him being very entertaining.

Cheers to everyone in this thread, I appreciate knowing that I'm not missing anything by not watching NC anymore. I was really tempted to when I saw it was Christmas with the Kranks, but given another divergence into tone-deaf audience response, I think I'll keep away and save 40 minutes.

I REALLY don't see how everyone sees this as taking a shot at those who don't like all skits. It sounds like most of you just saw that joke in the middle about his Hocus Pocus review and shut it off.
I legitimately liked this review. I like how he used both old and new styles to rip this film a new one, I liked him having an overall story that actually tied in with the film in a way, and most importantly I like him for finally admitting that Demo Reel was bad and he should have left "Well Alone" (his exact words).
That last speech was something I needed to hear and I'm almost sure others need to hear too. Yes, a good portion of his old reviews have good moments, but besides a few I can honestly say most of them i don't watch at all, and out of the handful I do watch I literally watch just for moments and never a full review (I'll legit watch the Double Team review just for the ending). His new stuff even has more stuff that is more memorable (Like Satan and his Daughter, bad lip sync Rita, and obsessive NC fangirl among others)
He needs to find a balance and I think this video is in the right direction.

Yeah he used both styles, but the whole setup was "I'm going to use as little effort as possible" i.e. do an old one. How many times did he go "Oh, I can't do that, I said no effort" or a variation? He can just dismiss them as a load of memes without reason, but people liked them, hell "Of Course!" Is still used by other reviewers today. His new stuff DOES have good things like you mention, it also has stuff like "Neo is TOM!!!!" Neither is perfect, and while fans are always going to debate the merits of different styles, cuz that's what fans do, the guy making them going out of his way to take shots at people is just a bit sad.

It was absolutely taking a shot at those who don't like the skits. As was mentioned, the whole theme was: "what I was doing was inferior". Which, if dude feels that way is totally fine, but it doesn't make those that don't agree wrong. Hell, I wasn't a fan of the memes either, but I felt the were much less intrusive and sometimes annoying than the 'new style' much of the time.
And I guess that's the thing, for me personally and I suspect others, I don't care about or want a 'story' from a review. All the extraneous stuff is just filler and more than a little annoying, particularly because a lot of the time it's just not very entertaining. I think the same about other people that do similar work: whether it's Linkara with his storyline stuff, the Video Game Nerd when he was doing more skit heavy stuff etc, whatever of that ilk I just absolutely do not care about, and would rather see a fifteen-twenty minute review rather than a thirty-forty five minute short film tacked on that as often as not just ain't entertaining.
Are their fans of that? Totally, and that's fine. And it's this guy's art, so he can totally do what he enjoys/wants with it particularly since it's free content. There's no legitimate way to argue that, but at the same time there's no obligation for anyone to like it. No one 'needs to hear' a speech about why a guy has/is changing his art. That's totally his call.

I don't see it as a shot to people who like it, I see it as a guy who looks back and sees what he used to think he'd get away with. It's like a writer who has gone on to being published going back and re-reading their 8th grade Harry Potter fanfiction. There may have been people who liked that, but for someone who has moved on, they can see the objective difference in quality. Reusing assets in the name of an inside joke and calling it a critique is objectively lazier than what he does now, and both hit the mark about as often. And tbh, I remember in a lot of old threads about his stuff before he changed his styles, and there was a lot of griping about it too. Yes, people liked them, that's no reason to hold the guy to do that style forever. Does that mean that his response to critique are always good? Of course not, he seems like a thin-skinned chipmunk sometimes. But are any of his new responses to criticism anywhere near as bad as Douchey McNitpick was? Not a chance.

I think the end is what ties it together.
I see it as the entire review was Past Critic only wanting to be old school, and Present Critic hating his old style of reviews, but the end pretty directly states that living in the past is wrong, but so is being completely ashamed of your past.
Was it a way to vent at the criticisms his modern style gets? Most likely, but I saw it more as him stating "This is where I am now. If you're not happy with that, the old stuff is right here. But this is who I've become." And as someone who enjoys both styles, I can completely see his point of view.

Was going to watch this one, which'd be the first in like seven months of his I've watched, until I was told about the skit thing by a friend.
Yeeeeah, for me, the problem isn't that the skits are something different. It's that the skits aren't funny, often veer wildly off topic, frequently are just whining about people who don't like his stuff anymore, and make the videos too bloated.

The Walkers aren't good comedy writers. They can be good with observational humor (particularly that of pop culture), but when it actually comes to actual comedy, they almost always fall flat. It was true in the days of Melvin: Brother of the Joker, it was true with Demo Reel, and it is certainly true now in Demo Reel II: Starring Nostalgia Critic. What the Walkers find funny is usually stuff that ultimately doesn't resonate that well with viewers, especially their new stuff. Especially since they don't allow for their work to be filtered with other people before they put it out for the world to see. it's usually why the episodes they hype as their funniest yet are often met with the most disdain.

His new stuff even has more stuff that is more memorable (Like Satan and his Daughter, bad lip sync Rita, and obsessive NC fangirl among others) He needs to find a balance and I think this video is in the right direction. The problem is this has nothing to do with him trying something new. He paints his critics of his skit filled style as a bunch of Luddites afraid of new things. I don't mind if Doug does new things. His show constantly changes as years go by. Even short episode ideas like Was That Real or Things You Didn't Notice were new ideas. I like those. The problem is that his skit heavy style does not work. His skits are hit and miss. And when they get stretched out into entire episodes, they lose even more strength. When he actually addressed criticism of the function of the skit style, he very briefly dismisses it by saying that critics reviewed movies without clips many years before. The problem with this is that most of these clipless reviews didn't involves skits. These were guys writing movie reviews in newspapers and magazines as articles. And when they were reviews on tv, they were like 2 minutes long. So they could get away with out using clips. And the big irony in him admitting Demo Reel didn't work, when his current episodes are pretty much Demo Reel 2.0 with The Nostalgia Critic label slapped on.
