Or does it simply just look bad because the amount of quality shows on Netflix and cable spiked over the last decade?
Growing up, ALL the shows I watched were on network TV, now I can't say I watch a single show. They all seem overly gimmicky, and the acting is poor. Network shows have a bad habit of taking pretty people, over people who can actually act.

I feel like it's a combination of both, but I'm sure I'll be proven wrong(like always).

The Simpsons, Seasons 3-6? *uncontrollable vomiting*
Freaks and Geeks? *throws television in a dumpster*

Cw shows are all good. Other than that network shows are abysmal and formulaic. And now more than ever appeasing PC, advertisers and the like.

Nothing specifically mentioned here, but I watched what as basically trying to be a documentary on tv that more or less clung to the 'cable is god' ideal. In discussing quality dramas in the history of television, most of the time was dedicated to 'Breaking Bad' and 'Mad Men'. A little bit for Sopranos. I know serialization wasn't always as popular as it is now for dramas, but it really felt like a poorly researched episode. It wasn't a hack-job either, a lot of work went into describing why 'Breaking Bad' and 'Mad Men' are such good shows by a variety of people in the business.
That said, cable tv is why we had stuff like 'Toddlers and Tiaras' and 'Taradise' and so many, many episodes of 'Monday Night Raw'. I do love 'Mountain Monsters' though, legit one of my top 10 on tv right now.

Most of what I watch now is on OTA channels. Which is a change from a few years ago.
There is decent dramas like Supergirl and Flash. And some really funny sitcoms like Goldbergs,The Middle,Modern Family and Fresh off the Boat. Really outside of Walking Dead and Ash vs Evil Dead I am not watching anything on non-OTA networks. Seems to me most Cable networks have way to many reality and bad ripoff shows.

I think its always been hit & miss. Some of it was terrific, some it was terrible.
But I do think cable, tivo, netflix & hulu have really made people realize how bad the bad parts of network TV are because there are more than just 4 options and you were bascially held hostage by those 4 networks if you wanted to watch TV at all. There would be a lot of "least objectionable programming" on where it wasn't like they were making compelling TV, just stuff broad and bland enough to get the most people to watch.
I think its very interesting that in my lifetime I've bascially seen TV go from just 4 channels to hundreds of channels to internet channels. The way our options have multiplied in the past 30 years is amazing when you think about how long network tv basically held an oligopoly on TV.
I mean, from basically the late 1940's to the early 1980's there were 4-5 channels. That's nearly a half century of 4 channels owning the airwaves.
Then from mid/late 1980's-now, in bascially the same amount of time we've seen the amount of "channels" skyrocket from 5 network channels, to a hundred cable+network, to 200+ channels, then Tivo & Netflix, hulu, OTT services in general.
Not to mention the explosion of VHS/DVD/BluRay/Digital.
Another example of anyone who talks about the "good old days" being better as complete delusion.

There are some really good Network shows. Personally I like watching Brooklyn 99, Bob's Burgers, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, and Fresh Off The Boat. Criminal Minds is also pretty good and it can go into pretty disturbing territory for a procedural. Hell, even The Simpsons is all right these days.

I don't have cable or even farmervision, so network vs cable makes no difference to me. If a shows enjoyable, I'll watch it

Another example of anyone who talks about the "good old days" being better as complete delusion. In retrospect it's kinda surreal to think how many really awful shows in the 90s had 20 million viewers just because people were too lazy to change the channel in btwn Friends and Seinfeld or in btwn Seinfeld and ER.

I appreciate shitty shows on Network TV for the hassle they save me in day to day work. When somebody starts talking about their favorite show, Two Broke Girls, I can immediately stop paying attention to them. They obviously aren't important enough in the world to matter.

I just wish daytime TV didn't suck so much ass with their talk shows and (ugh) court shows...
