I remember WWE had a helluva time trying to register the name 'Ryback.' The earliest I can find that Ryback used the name was 2008 for FCW, which was a developmental territory.

Smart move for trying to trademark his nickname. More talents should try to trademark valuable parts of their gimmicks and intellectual images.

The thing is, I'm almost positive WWE has it built in to their contracts that the nicknames, catchphrases, etc. that talent create while under contract playing their characters in WWE become the intellectual property of WWE.

MVP created his character while under WWE contract and trademark it. He's a major exception and almost nobody has done what MVP did. He completely created the character and wanted assurances that he would own everything about it and Johnny Ace made sure that he got it. This practice is not even a new thing and WCW also did this, especially during the Monday Night War.

It's one thing if WWE came up with your name and gimmick. It's another when you created it and WWE retain rights to your work.

If I recall, MVP created the character inspired by prima donna big money athletes (like Terrell Owens at the time). He created the look and name and even wrote out a longterm plan for himself. He was so proud of the character that he wanted assurances that he would own everything before he gave WWE all his ideas. Johnny Ace made it happen for him. More talent should be proactive like that.

"The Big Guy" Ryan Reeves is a pretty good indie name. We can do better... Ryan "Don't Call Me Keanu" Reeves

I remember in 2005, there was an issue with someone else trademarking "Captain Charisma" so they had to stop selling those shirts. Come to find out, Christian is the one who had done it. He also trademarked his logo, so both WWE games that came out that year featured Christian with blank tights. Why didn't he just ask them to share a bigger cut of the profits from those shirts or get the makers of the games to pay him directly for the use of the logo?

More likely scenario is he did and got a "No, we're good" in return.

After WWE denies him rights to the nickname and the side effects of certain performance enhancing substances become known, he then goes on to trademark "Size Doesn't Matter Guy".

He should also trademark Rieback, Ryeback, Riback, Rybak, Rybac etc.... Is "Riback" the name of the restaurant/sports bar he's going to open up? Come on down to Riback. Our baby back ribs will have you saying "FEED...ME...MORE!".
