My friends had this conversation at work. The Big Four of the Muppets are Kermit, Piggy, Gonzo and Fozzie. But we couldn't agree who's the fifth most important character. We figured it had to be Animal, Rowlf or Scooter.
Thoughts?

Great question. My vote goes to Statler/Waldorf as a combined unit. They get consistently high amounts of lines and presence.

Statler: The posts on the FAN board say we're going to be number 5. Waldorf: That's strange, whenever I think of posts on the FAN board what comes to mind is going number 2.

Rowlf. He was the first Muppet to get national notoriety, and supposedly Jim Henson's favorite.

I see more Animal merchandise than any other muppet.

I think it's the Electric Mayhem as a collective unit, but I voted for Animal since he's the most recognizable of the group.

It's close between Rowlf and Animal.
Rowlf definitely was up until Muppet Babies, but in the subsequent live action movies played a smaller role than Animal.

Realistically it's probably Statler and Waldorf, but in my heart Sam the Eagle is Best Muppet.

For me it will always be Rowlf because without him none of the others would have ever come to be. He was the first to get any traction and become marketable in any way and supposedly Henson had a soft spot for him.

I gotta go with Rowlf, because he was Henson's favorite and he was that original muppet that started it all.
Had Scooter not disappeared for the better part of 20 years after his performer (Richard Hunt) died, he'd probably be #5. Now, he probably ranked below Animal, Statker/Waldorf and maybe even Rizzo and Pepe (both of whom became big deals in his absence, though I think their day has passed moreorless).

I'm guessing this list doesn't count any of the Sesame Street Muppets, right?

I'm guessing this list doesn't count any of the Sesame Street Muppets, right? Yeah, same as not having Fraggle Rock or Labyrinth or something, Sesame Street's sort of its own thing they've had crossovers with at various points.

I'm guessing this list doesn't count any of the Sesame Street Muppets, right? That would've opened up a huge can of worms. Hell, one might argue Big Bird is bigger than everyone but Kermit
