Popularity wise, it's Animal, no question.

I voted for Rowlf, because given the chance I always vote for Rowlf. I think Animal is the actual right answer. He is zeitgeisty in ways others on this list aren't. However, I think Pepe deserves consideration. I feel like over the last 10 years or so he has become well known. I see him on the Disney Junior spots talking to kids and whatnot.

Lew Zealand or Beauregard, possibly Uncle Deadly, less possibly Rizzo.

I voted Animal, but could understand Rowlf for the above mentions. I look at The Muppets and it almost felt like Rowlf was a throwaway character, while Animal had a storyline. Also, I cried multiple times during that movie, so I value it a lot, lol.
I do love Statler/Waldorf the most out of any of the characters though.

It really depends...
Current show - Scooter New Disney movies - Walter Historically- Rowlf In my head - Swedish Chef or Beaker Muppet Babies and merchandise - Animal
Even if you count the combo of Rizzo and Pepe. That's another possible answer.
But I'm going with the right answer Bean Bunny.

It's probably to do with him being a Jim Henson voice, and since his death he's faded into the background. Kermit is obviously far too iconic so they recast him, and his other most notable characters were ones in groups, Waldorf and Dr Teeth so they were easier to transition.

Well Rowlf was the closest to Jim's own voice. It took Bill Baretta a long time to get the voice/feel comfortable enough to use it. Thats why in either Muppets in Space or something else late 90s early 2000's there was a throw away line when he finally spoke again, and all the other muppets turn to him in shock and his response to why he had been silent was "I had nothing to say" In that down time, Pepe came onto the scene and Animal got more attention.

I think Animal has eclipsed Rowlf. Currently, I'd say Animal, though I concede at one time it was Rowlf.
