...apart of the zeitgeist and be one of definitive versions and/or a new classic replayed year after year. Was it the Mariah Carey "All I Want for Christmas is You"?

I'd probably say The Darkness with Don't Let The Bells End, and that was out in 2003.

I remember someone saying "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was probably it-I'd have to agree.
Before that, I'd say "Last Christmas " which seems to be getting bigger and bigger

Before that, I'd say "Last Christmas " which seems to be getting bigger and bigger I love that the original Wham! version of "Last Christmas" still gets played. It's really the only time you ever hear Wham! on the radio outside of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." George Michael is such an amazing songwriter. It's a shame most people just remember him for his more silly, poppy music and bathroom shenanigans than the legit good stuff.

That Where Are You Christmas song that was in the live action Grinch has become a pretty big staple. Movie might not have been very good, but that song lives on.

Fun fact. Last Christmas/Everything She Wants is the best selling single in the UK that never made it to #1. The original Band Aid stopped it reaching #1 and Wham! donated all the royalties from their single to Band Aid too. The double a side helped because Everything She Wants is an excellent song and aided sales long after the festive period was over. As for the topic in question, I can see Underneath the Tree by Kelly Clarkson becoming a future "Christmas classic". It's not the greatest song ever but it has that something about it that makes it special.

My paper did a Top Ten Christmas Songs played in stores and Kelly's made it to 4th. Last Christmas was 1st, bumping Mariah to 2nd.
I've become a fan of Amy Grant's "I Need A Silent Night". Woman has 5-6 Christmas albums, she should be on the list somewhere. "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)" may be too religious for some, but her versions of "Grown-Up Christmas List" and "The Night Before Christmas" are stellar.

Trans Siberian Orchestra's Xmas Eve Sarajevo? not sure if it counts because that is kind of a cover of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Carol of the Bells

Something I kinda go by is if I haven't heard of it, it's not that big of a song, and I haven't heard of most of these newer ones. If they were that big, they would have gotten into my radar whether I liked it or not. Kinda like sports figures.
