When Vader left the WWF, why were WCW or ECW never an option? I'm sure he would do fairly well in either company, especially fresh off WWF tv. Anyone know why he went straight to Japan?

ECW I'd imagine might not have been in a position to afford him. WCW probably wouldn't have been all that hospitable to him at the time. Vader was probably seen of a relic of another era, where not many years had passed but a great deal had changed.

Wcw higher ups still hadn't forgiven him for bailing on Hogan,Sting & Macho at war games by not filing the proper paperwork.
Ecw had just gotten rid of one smelly wrestler in Buh Buh Ray Dudley they wouldn't have been in a rush to bring in another.

I don't know and it always saddened me, I thought he'd have worked superbly under Paul E's booking and if he had stayed through 99 and 2000 there were a number of good fueds he could have. Rhino, Van Dam, Awesome are three guys I'd liked to have seen something with. Maybe even squeeze in a match with Taz if there's time too?

Guys like Steve Williams were still getting jobs in WCW that late, and Virgil remained employed and given screentime. I don't think it has anything to do with Vader being seen as a relic.

Hell, in 1996, let alone 1999, Jeff Jarrett felt like a relic, and they signed him TWICE between those 3 years. Vader would fit in just fine.

Fair, I guess they also had Animal, it's not like he had a ton left to over anyone.

Vader liked getting paid so I doubt ECW was really an option, WCW was already top heavy and he was jobbed out of the WWF so wouldn't have gotten a great deal so Japan was a better bet.

Wasn't Vader a top gaijin for AJPW by then?
Why would he even consider such a thing? (Unless he wanted to be closer to home.)

Vader said he was in touch with Paul Heyman and briefly discussed meeting up to discuss an agreement

Seems to me he would have gotten a fairer shake in Japan than anywhere else really

Would've been cool to see Vader in the role Sid took in 99/2000 leading to a Goldberg feud

Japan could pay him the most. And he wouldn't have fit in that era WCW.

If he went to WCW, he would have jobbed to Goldberg and then turn into a face mid-carder. WCW stopped giving out big money by 1999, so he more than likely would have taken a paycut from his WWF contract. ECW wouldn't give him nearly as much money as WCW would, but they would have treated him like a god, he would beat mostly everyone and had a big match against Mike Awesome or Taz. Money talks and since Vader was getting older, I think he didn't care as much about a push than money. So, Japan was the perfect place for him. Not only was he getting a huge push like ECW would have given him, he was getting more money than WCW would have offered him. He found his calling in Japan, it was the perfect place for him to end his career in a high note.

All Japan was giving him big paydays and the freedom to work the way he wanted. Neither WCW or ECW during that time were in any position to make Vader work exclusively with them.

Also to consider...was Paul Orndorff still working in the back at WCW?

He was too flabby and had the going down the card stink on him, so Japan would have only had him job to main eventers then be relegated to six man opening match duties.

He was getting main events, a huge push, and huge arena events in AJPW. Nothing in the States would have come close to what he was getting there.

Also to consider...was Paul Orndorff still working in the back at WCW? I think he was there till near the end, he did some stuff with the Natural Born Thrillers.
