He was getting main events, a huge push, and huge arena events in AJPW. Nothing in the States would have come close to what he was getting there. Really? From 2000 to now he's only heen in 4 mains as a single and a dozen in tags and such...hell, hes only been in 34 matches in AJPW since 2000. Vader came back in 1998 to a massive push in the Real World Tag League. He had a Triple Crown run in 1999 and main evented against Misawa in the Tokyo Dome, and he continued to main event into 2000. He had victories over all of the big AJPW names, from a quick look at his history there. Even if he didn't work super many dates, he was assuredly paid a very pretty penny if they valued him enough to have him go over Kobashi and Kawada. AJPW had the NOAH exodus not long after that, but he could not have foreseen that and was probably thinking about stepping back anyway after a very physical and rough career.

Yeah he was pretty successful in All Japan, WCW he would have a role like Bam Bam I imagine, jobbing to Goldberg and the shitty hardcore division.

I get why he went to Japan, but it would have been awesome to see him in ECW.

Would have loved him in ECW having a gimmick of just beating the hell out of people without resorting to weapons.
I'm not sure if anyone actually did a "do I LOOK like I need to start swinging chairs?" gimmick in ECW

I don't think it was a gimmick of his, exactly, but I know Lance Storm did not use weapons particularly often. I want to say he might have even given chairshots in the single digits in his entire run. I don't recall it being a bragging point, though, so much as just not being what he was about. Closest I can think of to this would be when Brock Lesnar had a singapore cane match with Tommy Dreamer, not long after Brock's debut. He went the entire match without using the cane even once, having no need of it.

All Japan paid him extremely well. They even gave him the Triple Crown. ECW wasn't exactly reliable with money and I'm sure Vader wasn't interested in the headaches that would probably come from the political side of doing business in WCW at the time.

I'm not sure if anyone actually did a "do I LOOK like I need to start swinging chairs?" gimmick in ECW Taz did. He did a promo on a 1996 episode of ECW television after losing a match to Rob Van Dam in which a RVD separated Taz' shoulder with a chair shot. Taz goes on "Rob Van Dam uses chairs. I don't need chairs, my hands are my chairs! Sabu uses tables. I don't need tables, my hands are my tables! Sandman uses a stick ("Singapore cane"/Kendo stick). I don't need sticks, my hands are my sticks! You see, I don't need any weapons. My hands are weapons!" www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iZ8tDYDy6M

AJPW gave him a sweet contract. IIRC it was like 750k for 20 appearances?

That would be an awesome gimmick.
Weapons vs. Vaders fists

I don't know Vader personally, but he doesn't strike me as someone who would be willing to split road expenses with Bilvis Wesley, EZ Money, and Chilly Willy to drive to all of the towns while working for free.

Now that you mention it, Foley singled Vader out as a quite extravagant spender. Yeah, well, Foley is a known cheapskate, so Vader's "extravagant" spending might have been "normal" spending? Plus, Vader must've made amore money than Foley anyway, so he'd have more to spend.

Vader had a legit backstage brawl with Paul Orndorff before leaving WCW. I think the brawl may have factored into his choice to leave the company, and same goes for politics (Hogan holding him down once he came into the company.)
Hogan was still in WCW in the late 90s. What about Orndorff?

I'm not sure if anyone actually did a "do I LOOK like I need to start swinging chairs?" gimmick in ECW Taz. In one of the Apter magazines, a bunch of retired wrestlers reviewed active wrestlers, and Ole Anderson said that Taz - a highly technical wrestler - stood out in ECW circa 1998 as being someone who won matches by throwing suplexes instead of swinging chairs.

ECW in 99 and 00 May not been about to afford him compared to what he made in Japan. WCW likely wasn't affording much after letting him go a few years ago. I think the reason why he went to Japan because he was still used as the Main Event player and getting paid a great deal of money.

Japan is easy to do, schedule wise. Making mid 6 figures, and not having to travel 300+ days a year is not such a bad option.

Taz vs. Vader and Vader vs. Goldberg would've been intriguing.

Wasn't there a rumor that Paul Heyman was interested in signing Vader but only for sole purpose of jobbing him out to Taz???
