Inspired by this video, if you did this match today, who are the 8 men you would put in it? The winner gets an automatic title shot against Reigns. These are men that would be on the cusp of something relevant. But you must pick one veteran who was already a world champion to replicate Orton in 2009 in this match.
My picks:
Cesaro Ambrose Ryback Owens Rusev Del Rio (He's the delusional former world champion in his match like Orton was) Big E Kofi
Winner: Big E
Yes, it's called breakthrough for a reason. And a one off Big E vs. Roman would be a battle of HOSSES.

Ambrose Cesaro Owens Kalisto Ryback Cody Rhodes Neville Rusev
Winner: Cody or Cesaro
Owens & Ambrose can get a title match without a problem, Cody deserves a shot and so does Cesaro
Kalisto is not World Champ material IMO but he's fun to watch, same for Neville
Ryback World Title push days are gone and it seems like the same for Rusev , but there's still hope for Rusev for 2016-2017

Sheamus - The former champion who wants to get back at Reigns and sees this as an easy path back to the title. Someone for the fans to hate, who will get a big pop when he's finally eliminated. Besides, who doesn't like the Brogue Kick?
Seth Rollins - Coming back of a major injury (possibly turning face) with a chip on his shoulder. Lasts to the very end thanks to underhanded tactics but still gets eliminated by the eventual winner.
Randy Orton - A top tier guy who always gets a big reaction from the crowd. Let him go crazy on everyone with some creative RKOs, eventually getting eliminated somewhere near the middle of the match by shady circumstances (screwed by the person he'll feud with next).
Bray Wyatt - A big man who could insert some new blood at the top. He's well received by the fans but needs some direction in his career. Finding a way to focus him on a single, well-defined goal will give him some much needed character growth and maybe win back some of the fans he's lost over the last year.
John Cena - You have to have Cena in there. He's the face of the company and one of the best wrestlers on the roster. Marks will cheer for him to win, smarks will cheer for him to lose, which will help keep the crowd invested one way or another. Should be one of the final three before being eliminated be new blood.
Alberto Del Rio - The guy's proven he can be a heat magnet when he actually gives a shit about the material. Turn him loose and let him be the "El Patron" for a little bit (even if it infringes a little on Bryan's shtick with the Si Si Si) and watch the crowd warm up to him. Gets eliminated halfway through by his next feud so the fans don't groan about him being shoved down their throats.
Brock Lesnar - The monster that forces the rest of the field to work together, trying to get him out. Let Lesnar destroy everything in his path for a bit then give him the showdown spot against Sheamus, so they can trade power moves for a bit near the middle of the match then another showdown (after Sheamus is eliminated) against Cesaro to elevate Cesaro a little and make that Lesnar's next feud before Wrestlemania (where he gets his next shot against Reigns).
Cesaro - Similar to Orton, the man gets a hell of a response everytime. Let him run free for a bit and pull off some amazing moves and bust out the big swing again. Cesaro should be doing most of the work while someone like Seth comes up behind and picks the bones for eliminations. Cesaro wins the match and gets the title shot, putting on a hell of a match with Reigns (and helping Reigns improve in the process) before doing the job and moving into his own feud with Lesnar.

Trying to give as close a match to the old one, your roster there was:
Kofi Sheamus MVP Mark Henry Cody Rhodes Ted DiBiase R-Truth Randy Orton
With that in mind, this Breakthrough Battle Royal would be:
Cody Rhodes- Big E. Ted DiBiase- Kofi Kingston. Top tag team to top tag team. Kofi- Dean Ambrose. The one who seems to be the foregone conclusion. Randy Orton- The Miz. A good fit for "delusional former champion". Mark Henry- Stardust. The veteran who never got their moment yet. R-Truth- Neville. Exciting, fits well with Miz in the other role. MVP- Cesaro. Someone who seems to be on tap for a World Title reign, but never quite got that far and no one can point to a good reason why not. Sheamus- Kevin Owens. Most recent debut who was treated as a worldbeater on the main roster. Also the one who wins it.

You have 6/8 former champs when the idea of the Breakthrough Battle Royal is that almost everyone involved (except one) is someone whose never held a world title.
