Did the old man kinda have a smirk on his face as he sent him to the car?
I've watched this movie lots of times, but this is the first time I think I noticed it.
He was pissed when he got back in the car and told what Ralphie did, so I guess the smirk wouldn't make sense, but does anyone else think that he might?
Also, if Ralphie had owned up to hearing it from his dad, it might have made just a little more sense, when the mom broke the lamp to spite her husband

She broke the lamp because she hated the lamp and felt embarrassed it was in the window for all the world to see.

She broke the lamp because she hated the lamp and felt embarrassed it was in the window for all the world to see. Yea but she seemed particularly annoyed by the old man's cursing and complaining while he was in the basement and she then made her move. But yea she was going to do it at some point

A while back, I was at Wal-Mart with my son. We were about to cross to the parking lot, when I said, "Hold on, buddy. We have to wait for the cars to pass." However, for some reason.. I got hung up after "have to wait for..." To which he immediately said, "for all these douchebags?" It was absolutely hilarious, however... I did want him to know he shouldn't use that word.
In that, I always figured it was something his dad was amused by and thought it will make a funny story, but the fact remains... he still had to punish him for it.

He was amused but also couldn't exactly let it slide, nor do I think he would have wanted Ralphie to know that and encourage him to keep saying it.

Maybe the pissed part came because he couldn't fix the tire in 4 minutes.

Some dogs invading the house and stealing the turkey was enough to make him yell in tongues.
Ralphie's dad was a weirdo.

Some dogs invading the house and stealing the turkey The furnace was enough to make him yell in tongues. Fixed. Actually the turkey incident was one of his few intelligible examples of profanity.

Darren McGavin was the MVP of that movie. He made the times he swore so natural, it wasn't just swearing just because.

Reminds me of something when I was little. You know how Ralphie says his dad worked in profanity the same way most artists work in clay? Well that used to be my dad. When I was little one time we were going to the grocery store and they had road work, complete with those orange and white barrels. My dad was mad about the mess and called it a crock of s***. Well we go back through the same area later and i see the barrels are gone so I say "Crock of s*** gone". My parents did not punish me but my mother did tell me that those were called barricades. My dad later said he learned right then and there that everything he said or done was being watched.

As a kid, I just found the Old Man funny, but as an adult I started to appreciate the nuances of his character, and notice the little things that kinda make him one of the more loveable characters.

My question is why did Ralphie's mom have to ask where he heard that word? Probably echoing up from the basement. How thick was that woman?

Honestly I think she knew where he heard it from, even Swartz's mother knew where he picked it up. Maybe her reason for asking was because she hoped it was from his friends and not his father. It is obvious early in the movie she is concerned about the kids picking up his foul mouth hence her little pitchers comment after the Olds froze.
