So what was the deal with this? I was still young to the dirt sheets/IWC so I avoided all of that pretty much.
Why did he return and then leave again so suddenly? Wasn't he chasing the IC title too?

He came back, wrestled a few forgettable matches, nobody gave a shit, so he left again.
Far as I remember, anyway.

To prove the WWE wasn't racist. Michael Hayes did some sort of racist shit around this time, so WWE went on damage control.

Well he was right this time around when he said you're looking at the real deal now, because that return was crap....

It was a pretty good idea to bring in a solid vet who could still go in the ring and WWE just executed it poorly. I don't think they showed a single clip of D'Lo to remind the audience of who he actually was, which would have been helpful considering he had peaked about 9 years earlier. And they almost immediately made him into a jobber, he could have at least been a guy to trade some wins with other midcarders.

WWE brought him back because of his work in All Japan. Sadly, he didn't performed like he did there and was gone before anyone could get pissed about his presence.

I have no recollection of this at all. But this was probably around the same time they brought back Tatanka and Goldust (again). Maybe they were looking for reliable veterans to work with some of the younger guys?

Didn't he have a ROH run around the same time or was that a weird dream.

Yeah I can't say it was his fault as they put him back in with no fanfare. There were no promos, nothing. It was weird they did it at all. Look at a guy like Finlay he was a guy who never wrestled in WWE before and was like 50 but they gave him little vignettes, made him out to be a badass and fans bought it and took to him both when he was face and heel. They could have at least tried with D'Lo.

The only match I remember him having in 2008 was teaming with Kelly Kelly vs. Glamarella.

I wouldn't of minded seeing him get a run with the strap. First black WWE champion would've create quite a buzz for the product and given a boost to the business.

One of my faves ever, so this was extremely upsetting to me. When I heard he was working decent dark matches I hoped and prayed he'd land on Smackdown or ECW because on the cesspool of Raw's undercard he'd be screwed. Sure enough, he won one match and got no mic time before becoming an instant jobber. What a waste.

I remember he showed up and my reaction was "I KNOW HIM FROM TEH SMACKDOWN GAEM I HOPE HE WINS TITLE!"
And promptly not caring when he disappeared again.

He came back so that everyone could get a look at the real deal, now.
Unfortunately, they kicked his sorry ass out on the street.
