I still remember things like Andre The Giant getting pelted with garbage during his entrance at Wrestlemania III or the ring full of garbage during the formation of the nWo at Bash at the Beach 1996. Going through the network, I also notice garbage throwing quite a bit during 1980s WWF and late 1990s WCW.
When did this type of thing stop exactly? I remember the last times as far as big promotions are concerned were at the WWECW episode in 2006 when Big Show won the ECW title from RVD and at TNA Slammiversary 2006 when Jeff Jarrett won the King Of The Mountain match.
Did the US states or rather the arenas themselves enact stricter codes of conduct for events held indoors with penalty fees enforced for any of these incidents should they occur? Did the wrestling organizations enforce stricter security with special personnel collecting used drinks and food plates after their usage? Or did fans just become better behaved in general?
On another hand, is this just a trend in the major national promotions, i.e. is garbage throwing still frequent at indy shows?

I'd say the WWF cracked down pretty hard after what happened to Droz, and rightfully so, a guy is paralysed for life because someone thought it'd be awesome to throw a full soda cup in the ring.

Didn't Droz say in an interview that the accident happened because it was an unlucky combination of him wearing a loose shirt, thus D'Lo was not able to get a proper grip on him as well as Droz not executing a proper jump to aid D'lo in the powerbomb? Unless of course the soda cup was the reason Droz could not perform a proper jump.

Im thinking it was probably just a gradual increase/coordination in security efforts over time leading to a higher likelihood of you getting thrown out if you did it. Then people stopped.
Didn't TNA give the crowd stuff to throw at Bully Ray when he joined Aces and Eights because they wanted that visual?

Being mainly a 90's WWF fan I had never seen or heard of fans throwing stuff in the ring until I saw pictures in WCW Magazine of the Hogan heel turn the ring covered in shit, I remember my 10 year old brain thinking "Wow, WCW fans must be pretty scummy." I later thought it was cool though that they added it to one of the WCW games I played, Nitro I think?

It is a proven fact that when wcw died all the scummy fans stopped watching & we now have a universe of mature well behaved sports entertainment fans.

As I said, that's just what my 10 year old self thought when I saw it. I'm not saying I actually think every WCW fan is scummy. I was actually a WCW fan aswell while it was on TV for a while over here around 93, I remember I got a Sting flask thing for my birthday one year.

It was a failed attempt at sarcasm on my part but I do find it odd that for the most part once wcw died this stopped happening. The only time that really sticks out was one of those uk only ppv's in 2001.

I remember at WM2000 fans pelted the ring with garbage when Trips retained, it wasn't on the level of BATB 96 or ECW 06 but it was noticeable.

Yeah, I think security's just tightened up over the past decade or so.

WCW wrestlers were lucky they only got hit by garbage. WWE wrestlers (Jericho, in particular) had to worry about being pelted with glow sticks. And ECW wrestlers? On any given night, fans might fill their ring with steel chairs.

Security crackdowns: You can't throw stuff in the ring, but if you just run up in there we won't stop you for a good 30 seconds

Also, the product isn't worth the effort to throw garbage anymore.
We've been blanded into submission.
