In terms of production, the philosophy at one point seemed to be "all this crazy shit is happening and we're scrambling to get it all on camera and played out on the microphone for the audience". It was an event being covered by a production crew. Now, it's like everyone is painfully aware it's a show and performing for the cameras. I know it's been this way for a while, but I'm having trouble pinpointing when that changed. It's such a big difference that you'd think there'd be a seminal shift in presentation. Maybe when they started scripting promos in 2002?

I thought things got really bad after they went HD in 08, combined with the aftermath of the Chris Benoit murders, when they really tried to alter their programming beyond "rassling"

Yeah, I feel the same way. It'd been slowly transforming for years, but the switch to HD to 08 was the first time I really noticed that heavily produced, overpolished look to the shows.

The name "Monday Night RAW" is awfully ironic now.
