Took a break from the Twilight Zone Marathon to watch part of that movie today. It was definitely one of those "WTF did I just watch???" experiences.

I actually LOVED that movie! Even if the plot can basically be summed up as, "My God is Caligula an asshole!"

The thing with Caligula is once you get past the shock factor of "Caligula and company engage in various depravities", nothing really happens in this movie. Tiberius dies, Caligula gets the throne, pisses off people, is murdered. McDowell is usually solid, but his performance is okay at best and the rest of the cast (Helen Mirren in a few scenes aside) get lost in the over the top perversion of the setting. As porn its a turn off, as a period drama its underwritten, as a freakshow repetitive, and as a movie it manages to be both tasteless and somehow dull.
John Hurt as Caligula in I, Claudius is much more worth one's time; managing a great performance and incredible writing. With minimal sets and budget, it pulls off the character better in a two minute scene than the aforementioned movie can in two hours.

Yeah, I prefer the I, Claudius version. Based on what I saw, I like to think Peter O'Toole and Malcolm McDowell both wept every time they remembered doing that movie.

That movie could have been so much better if it just had more nudity

Where else can you see someone worn like a Sock'em Bopper?
What an odd thing to have been made.

I still say it has one of the weirdest cuts in a film. All of a sudden in one scene, we just cut to two guys jacking off into a bowl. They achieve their goal and walk away, then the scene happens. Never at any point is it referenced why two guys were jacking off into a bowl or, more disturbingly, what they will do with the contents of said aforementioned bowl, and it has no bearing on anything else in the film.
Plus the boat scene was nuts.

I tried watching the uncensored version of this once. I tapped out once the title character was porking his sister.

The best dramatization of Caligula was Albert Camus' play. Shame they never made a movie of it.

Honestly think it's a legitimately good movie. A lot of it's spectacle over substance to be sure, but the thing is a pretty damn impressive technical achievement and has some great acting in there.
