It's going to be hard to do it. Ford is Indie, it isnt a character like Bond where you can just move on, because it's been too long and those films are too beloved.
You have to have Ford in some capacity, and if you go the son route, wipe away the stink of Shia LeBouf by casting someone whose actually liked, like Chris Pratt, who could do most of the action, with Ford in the role Connery had in Last Crusade. I'd say you dont kill him off though, hope he lives long enough to do Indie 6 and kill him there, so people get a good long transitional period.

I've seen a suggestion that they should have Harrison Ford turn up as old Indy and reminisce about a past adventure, leading to the whole movie being a flashback with a younger actor like Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper doing the actual action. Ford would then turn up at the end as a book end.

Ford would then turn up at the end as a book end. They did that with Young Indiana Jones episodes, so there is precedent for it, but I dont think that's what audiences for a movie would want. You can show Ford as Indie, then not use him as Indie in the actual adventure.

I'm hoping for a prequel. Any sequel is going to put the story too far into the future.

As much of a fan as I am of Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford in the role, the best route to take is a reboot.
However, I hope to f***ing God they don't make it Marvel sarcastic joke time every 30 seconds like they did with Star Wars. I know if they put Chris Pratt in the role, he can't help himself. We need witty one liners to keep the kiddos laughing. I'm not saying Indy can't be funny but not in the form they'll attempt. I hope for Bradley Cooper but I'm not holding my bteath...he's seriously the only guy I can see in the role.
Also, the toned down violence is going to be a big disappointment. It was disappointing when they did it in Crusade and even worse in Crystal Skulls.
And didn't Lucas clause himself in the case they made another movie when he sold it? Yeah, they're going to f*** it up.

Prequel makes the most sense. Have a younger Indy learning the ropes with Marion's father, then falling in love with her, then dumping her.

The best thing about Indiana Jones was his charm and wit. He hasn't lost that with age, so as long as they highlight that aspect of the character, it'll be fine.

Disney realizes that the ideal Indy film is one focusing on the lovable young sidekick to Jones finally growing up and moving into the role his father figure once held... Indiana Jones and the Knights of the (Short) Round Table is a go!

It'll actually be a prequel about the Jones family dog.

I was actually thinking they could use Sean Patrick Flanery for the part, but even he's too old to play Indy in his prime now.
