WWE isn't about the hardcore fans in the city the event is in, they're about the millions watching on TV at home. Then you shouldn't have literally said the people in the arena if that wasn't your point. I think my point is clear. You don't do a guy any favors by having him as a surprise debut in the Royal Rumble. Styles deserves a build up. The fact is, outside of some hardcore fans in the arena and watching MOST won't know who AJ is. It's a shame, but it's true.

The fact is, outside of some hardcore fans in the arena and watching MOST won't know who AJ is. It's a shame, but it's true. I disagree with the "MOST" people sentiment. While it's true that a lot of people who only live in the WWE bubble won't know who he is, I believe that we're past the tipping point to where a clear majority of the audience will have at least heard of Styles. Between WWE.com write-ups, his TNA, ROH, NJPW and Indie work and the internet wrestling community chatter in general Styles is a known commodity. You can't be a wrestling fan on the internet and not know of Styles, especially after this news broke. The WWE's audience is shrinking and the core (read: ones who are staying tuned) are the exact fans who would know exactly who he is... Just about the only positive spin you could put on the casuals leaving is that now a much larger percentage of the fans watching would recognize guys like Joe and AJ. Hell, TNA's high water mark for Impact was 2.9 million viewers, Raw's currently what? 3.3? 3.5? Granted that TNA rating was for a heavily hyped show with Hogan, but AJ was the world champion at the time (and beat Kurt Angle in the main event). People HAVE heard of him.
tl;dr The casuals are dwindling. The majority of WWE's audience is now fans who would have heard of Styles.

I'd rather they build the guy up and give us some history and see a video package about what this guy has done to merit so much attention.

A video package, hell a half-hour Finn Balor style special, would be nice. I'm sure ROH & NJPW would provide footage and they could just completely ignore his time in TNA. Hell, WWE'd love that.

If your guess was a new original gospel-rap track, step up and claim your prize... The shoe that Gawk Rivers was going to eat if Fernando from Los Matadores was in the Rumble. (Tastes like chicken)
