Don't see the resemblance at all. Me either. Aside from long hair (which isn't even styled the way Hunner had it) and green entrance lighting which he had back when he was a clean cut white bread babyface, I don't really see it either. Although I wouldn't put it past HHH to single out a random wrestler to mold into his image for more ego stroking. But why would you then have that guy lose to Tye effin Dillinger (even with a fluky roll up)? You say that as if Dillinger sucks. He has a pretty good gimmick going and the fans always seem very interested in him. |

If I could be serious for a minute(Dammit Lance) his updated look will get him another look or at least some consideration in regards to seeing what they could do with him. This is his last ditch effort to get noticed.

Damn, I'm getting major David Spade Joe Dirt vibes from that look.
It's really a shame what has become of Alex Riley. I remember being blown away by his NXT vignette and thinking he would be the future of this industry. The guy was so over during a time that it was almost impossible for faces to do so. It's funny how the credit is given to the Miz when guys like Alex and Damien manage to make the best of their feud with the dude.

He's got a ways to go still to match Eva Marie in terms of heel heat, though. Give him Li'l Natch as a crooked ref to go over a popular babyface (Gable) and make him intimidate Tom Phillips for the trashtalk he did on commentary during Riley's loss and we might have something of a decent gimmick for A-Ri.

The way that Riley has been treated over the years, he'd never be believable as a handpicked favorite of The Authority. They are the ones who "put him in a cage" in the first place, and in the meta "Reality Era" sense, they're the ones who put him on commentary and didn't realize he sucked donkey balls at it until it was too late and the WWE Universe mostly turned on him. They didn't answer his phone calls or have vignettes made for his return even though they put so much time and effort into overexposing the guys they DO like. Riley could never get Eva levels of heat for two reasons: 1.) Eva gets booed for being green as hell. Riley is competent at worst in the ring. He'll never get four stars from Meltzer but he can put on a solid match without stinking out the joint. 2.) Theres a chunk of the audience that still wants to cheer for him. People chanted "Rage Riley Rage" when A-Ry AGGRESSION'd Bull to death, and chanted the Cena-esque "Let's Go Riley/Riley Sucks" during this past match. Many people believe Riley was screwed over by the WWE machine and legit want to root for him to succeed. They give zero f***s about what Riley may or may not have said on Twitter about <insert Indy/puro star here>; hell, most of Riley's fans ARE Indy loving IWC smarks (because the casual audience probably forgot he existed by now). |

Little thing, but did anyone else notice his boots? I'm 90% sure A-Ri was wearing wrestling shoes and kickpads styled to look like tall boots. Bizarre.

Then the best course of action imo would've been not to make the match in the first place. Imo, Riley shouldn't be losing to anyone in NXT other than the indy darlings, Corbin, and the American Alpha guys, while Dillinger might've been better off being fed some more PC kids/Corey Hollis/John Skyler/Jesse Sorenson types or "looking good in defeat" against top guys so that he could get built up a bit more and the idea of Tye actually beating someone wouldn't appear to be a black mark on that guy. Dillinger's a great talent. My issue is not that Riley lost so much more that Dillinger is likely to just get crushed by someone the next time he's on TV so Riley looks like he can't beat the guy that everyone else can beat. |

He won't get 'go away' heat like Eva (which I'd argue is still good heat regardless of why they boo, but I digress) but the way he's made it a personal mission to highlight the 'cartoon' aspects of NXT i.e. 'Bullfit' and 'Perfect 10' being his last two opponents that are more concerned with appealing to the crowd rather than straight-up fighting, I can see the gimmick having legs if he's trying to be the 'legit' performer of NXT.
By having a 'no fun allowed' gimmick he can slide into Tyler Breeze or Tyson Kidd's place as a top midcard heel.
