Even arriving in the second season Joan Collins pretty much was Dynasty, a feat Heather Locklear followed on Melrose Place. Donna Mills did wonders for Knots Landing as well.
Any non-soap examples?

Without Danny Devito giving it credibility, I doubt Always Sunny would have been as a big of a cult hit and lasted as long.

I'm convinced two things saved Star Trek: TNG from cancellation after the first season; that the fanbase was desperate for any new Trek on television and that Patrick Stewart brought enough dignity and gravitas to make even the more cynical fans go "Alright, let's stick this s*** out for another season; see if it gets any better".

William Fitchner (sp?) in S2 of Prison Break.
that show only had one actual cool season in it, but Fitchner as the FBI agent chasing down the Foxriver gang made S2 WAAAAY better than it would have been otherwise.

Riker's beard is what saved ST:TNG. Riker got the beard in Season 2 and that's the show's worst season. There were some good actors considered for Picard, I remember Yaphet Kotto was on the short list, but Stewart is the strongest actor on the show. Maybe the best actor in the franchise.

Rob Lowe and Adam Scott on Parks & Rec I'd argue the second season was already well on the way when they retooled it from a clone of The Office but yeah, Ben and Chris joining the show was its "grow the beard" moment.

Although they're presenters not actors, Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman. The original Top Gear had been cancelled a few years earlier and Clarkson and Wilman had both at some point presented the show. They knew that the show could be saved by changing the format to a more energetic, entertaining format which concentrated on the chemistry between the presenters (which clicked in the second series when James May replaced Jason Dawe). They came up with the idea, the BBC resurrected Top Gear and it became the biggest factual show........in the world. (Of course, Clarkson's antics eventually led to him being shown the door).

Community did a fine job of replacing Chevy Chase, Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown with the likes of Keith David, Paget Brewster and Jonathan Banks.

Eddie Murphy with SNL in the Early 80s. The Show was on the verge of being canceled and when the show went on break during the summer of 1980, Dick Ebersol took over and fired a lot of people with the exception of Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo.

I'll give you Keith David and Jonathan Banks being tolerable replacements in a bad situation. But Paget Brewster was an annoying character that really hurt my enjoyment of the show. Season 6 was utter garbage.

No Jim Parsons and the Big Bang Theory probably would have lasted one season at most.
