2011 Braves--9 game Wild Card lead on September 1, only need to take 2 of 3 from a Philly team who had nothing to play for...and got swept, leading to the Cardinals sneaking in, upsetting Philly, blasting Milwaukee, then getting a couple of miracles to beat the Rangers. 2012 Reds--Went up 2-0 in San Francisco, with the next 3 at the Great American Ballpark---and lost the last 3, one where the Giants had one hit through 9, and one where Buster Posey hit a grand slam, and the Reds blew ample opportunities to tie or win. That last day of the 2011 regular season was wild. I've never seen anything like it.

Pats defense played pretty well in SB42. Their offense is the one who didn't show up. 14 points from a record breaking offense? Samuel dropped an INT, but it was a quite high pass and DBs drop easier picks all the time. They aren't a choke at all. If not for Tyree making an impossible play, they probably win that game. There's a difference between a mediocre performance and blowing it in the final moments.

There's a difference between a mediocre performance and blowing it in the final moments. I don't think you could be more wrong in who choked. Choking is letting the big stage get to you and playing worse than you're capable of. Noticeably worse. That fits the Pats offense much more than the defense. The Patriots had a historic all time offense, and they didn't show up. That's choking. The Giants, however, made very good plays at the end and got the job done. They converted a 3rd and 11 and a 4th and 1, not including the amazing Tyree catch that would have forced a 4th and 5. The Pats put up 38 on them in the regular season, and could only put up a TD a half. The Pats D played well enough, but the Giants made plays when in mattered. Blaming that loss on the defense instead of the offense is wildly misguided. That game changed on Tyree's catch, and the defense played it 1000% correctly.

Sharks blowing a 3-0 series lead against the Kings.
But we're in the Finals this year, so it's all good.

If they don't win it this year, I might have to say the Golden State Warriors this year.
73-9, best regular season in NBA history, but don't win the championship.

That's not really what a choke is, though. The Thunder are playing the best basketball of the entire playoffs. It's not really a case of nerves or if they played a bit better, they'd win. The Thunder are blowing them off the court. When you look at all the legendary chokes, they look nothing like this.

AC Milan blowing a 3-0 half time lead in the Champions League final against Liverpool and then forgetting how to score penalties is two chokes for the price of one.
Arsenal in the Premier League for the last decade.
And of course, in 2016 Tottenham Hotspur mastered the art of finishing third in a two-horse race.

If he would've just stayed behind the car, and then passed on the straightaway, we probably wouldn't be talking about Dan Wheldon winning the Indy 500 months before his tragic death.

The real sad thing is his 500 win was the only reason Wheldon was even in that race.

The Boston Red Sox in 2011. We had a one run lead going into the ninth against the Orioles and the Yankees had a seven run lead with six outs left against the Rays. And later that night - in the span of what seemed like five seconds - we had lost and the Rays had won and we were out of the playoffs. And that does not even cover us losing our AL East lead and massive wild card lead we had at the beginning of September. Oh how I've tried to erase that from memory. And then that lead to Bobby Valentine...ugh...

I never thought in a million years that the Sox would even compete for a title after the disaster that was the 2012 season. Only one other team in MLB history went from worst to first in one season and that was the 1991 Minnesota Twins.

To be fair, Atlanta also went worst-to-first that year; they just didn't win the Series.
