The only time I really liked Will Cain is when he jokingly played along with being antagonist with the LeBatard crew. Otherwise, I can't stand him. He's too much of a troll. It is low rent Skip Bayless where you are just arguing the other side even when it is 100 percent wrong just to be that guy It's like we know it is a gimmick but that doesn't make it any less trash because you're not entertaining

And FS1 has not only Skip, but Clay Travis, who is a low rent Will Cain.

The Skip investment has only been good because Shannon has been a good rival for him Colin Cowherd, Rob Parker, Jason Whitlock, etc are dudes who want to say stupid shit for views but no one is paying attention to them

I almost feel bad for ESPN (I said 'almost'), because this is of course a beast of their own making, where people with actual intelligent takes are drowned out by pompous, know-nothing windbags.
But, in their defense, I don't know if a show that isn't 'hot take' nonsense would ever get the ratings either.
I'm not really sure what they need to do to fill up all that airtime that would be a big hit these days.

ESPN likely won’t turn back now. The SAS clickbait hot takes are what they feel their audience wants. I’m not sure what the ratings are for First Take, Get Up, and other shows like that, but promoting the NBA nonstop with these never ending “is LeBron the best in the world?” debates don’t appear to be helping the NBA’s ratings. MLB actually did really well with regional TV ratings in 2019 and that was with ESPN refusing to admit they exist. The NBA has a younger fanbase so maybe cord cutting is a big part of that but I’d like to think an overexposure of stupidity that is ESPN’s debates show has lead to at least some viewer burnout/fatigue.
That’s why I’m looking forward to cable being phased out of sports eventually and everything is live streamed by the individual leagues. Might not happen for a while but I really see no reason to even have ESPN other than to watch a live game. It’s terrible otherwise.

But you sure as hell know when Stephen A. is coming on, dammit.

That is a strategic choice, they promote the f*** out of the NBA because they show a ton of NBA games. Why do you think they don't mention that hockey exists?

That’s true but they show MLB games as well, and most of the time the NBA games that ESPN shows have nothing to do with the topics they discuss on shows like First Take and Get Up. I don’t think the NHL has a deal with ESPN at all but I could be wrong. My point was ESPN is basically giving the NBA unlimited promo and their ratings are still down. On the flip side, Sunday Night Baseball viewership was up 3% in 2019 (compared to 2018), and if ESPN ever promotes baseball it is by accident. I’m curious why the unlimited hyping up of the NBA hasn’t translated to viewers on ESPN but of course with a younger demo NBA fans might be choosing to watch in other ways or simply waiting for the 10 minute condensed highlights that come out 30 seconds after a game ends.

ESPN/ABC have the NBA finals also....they don't get to show the world series or playoff games.

By the way, can we mention how ESPN on ABC is a complete joke and that it's a miracle that the NBA Finals are on network television at all? We call that Disney being Disney. The biggest problem that ESPN has to be honest is instead of covering the story they want to be the story. They started injecting politics into a bunch of their coverage when people from all political sides watch sports, no one wants to be hit with that shit when they're trying to watch sports to escape. Those 2 things turned off a bunch of people and then they added on by basically only caring to talk about the sports they carry when they have more time than they can fill on a daily basis.

With sports shutting down, something even more scary than the virus may emerge.

Hopefully people watch less, otherwise they really just are saying they watch ESPN just to hear SAS talk and not for the pretense of talking about sports.

Hopefully people watch less, otherwise they really just are saying they watch ESPN just to hear SAS talk and not for the pretense of talking about sports. Unfortunately at this point anyone who watches ESPN for sports is going to end up disappointed. SAS is the face of the company and he literally knows nothing about sports from an analytical standpoint. It’s all hot takes and screaming. That’s what ESPN’s demo wants. They want memes, reaction gif’s, etc, and that’s basically SAS’s gimmick at this point. I remember as a kid I so looked forward to watching Sports Center, Baseball Tonight, etc. Even the Around the Horn and PTI era was fine. It wasn’t until the success of SAS and Skip that sports media went insane with what they think appeals to viewers now. On top of that ESPN is way too political and exploitive now. It’s just a really bad combo.

Tessitore was hit or miss but inoffensive. Booger was straight up awful.

The problem with any Monday Night Football broadcast team that's chosen this season, and really, the problem with any MNF crew since 2016, has been the Peyton Manning-sized albatross in the background. Jason Witten wasn't ready for prime time and Booger McFarland was a catastrophe that everyone with a functioning auditory system could sense coming from a mile away. But really, it just has felt like Witten and McFarland were keeping the seat warm until Bristol put enough zeroes on the check to entice Peyton Manning to join the booth.
Manning already partners with ESPN with "Detail," so the network should just look at Tony Romo's $17 million annual contract with CBS and match it for Manning, because they know what they're going to get with him, they know he's going to be good at his job, and they know they're going to have consistency in the job for years to come. But if Manning doesn't want the job, then the Worldwide Leader needs to finally say enough's enough and move past it. They have in-house talent with Louis Riddick, Dan Orlovsky, and Randy Moss, or they could go off-campus and hire someone like Joe Thomas, Kurt Warner, or Nate Burleson.
As for the play-by-play announcer, since Mike Tirico departed for NBC in 2015, it's also been a revolving door in that seat with Sean McDonough for two seasons and Joe Tessitore for two seasons. Just as badly as ESPN needs to land their permanent lead analyst, they need to find a permanent play-by-play man that they can put their full weight behind and say, "This is the guy for the next decade," just like they did with Tirico during the first 11 years of the ESPN era of Monday Night Football. Looking at their pool of internal candidates, I like Adam Amin or Clay Matvick to be promoted from the college ranks, or to see Kevin Burkhardt get hired from FOX or Greg Gumbel brought over from CBS.
