Caron Butler appeared on set with Scott Van Pelt
Did they hire him from NBA TV?

So I read that a few of these people had years remaining on their contract. From what I understand, if you quit you don't get any $. If you're fired, you're owed what's due...so how are they saving $ if they're still paying people?

It allows them to cut their losses and free up money in the long term.

ESPN's $5.6 billion MLB deal ends in 2021. Their $15.2 billion Monday Night Football deal also expires in 2021. Their $1.4 billion per season NBA contract ends in 2024. Their $7.3 billion College Football Playoff deal runs out in 2025.
This issue they're having with expensive rights deals causing them to gut their on-air and behind the scenes talent isn't going to end any time soon.

At least with the other games they can those on ABC but with Baseball they are pretty much eating that one. I would assume they are scraping plans of giving the college conferences their own "program" sort of like how SEC has theirs.

Because those guys are allowed to find jobs somewhere else, if they do find a job ESPN doesn't have to pay them. Guys like Stark, Werder, and Katz will find jobs right away. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if MLB Network contacted Stark immediately, same with NFL Network and Werder, and CBS for Katz.

I read an article on Marc Stein, apparently he has like 2 or 3 years left on his deal and even though he got laid off, he can't post any new stuff or break any news. So he literally is sitting at home and doing nothing, and unless he wants to work for TNT or something, he'd have to negotiate a buyout with ESPN first. I would get it if it was someone like Ed Werder who is pretty good but...older, but Stein still has a ton of connections in the league and is young. I doubt he would want to just sit at home and do nothing.

Sara Walsh got let go after her maternity leave was over

That's pretty shitty of them. "Welcome back from maternity leave! BTW, we're gonna have to let you go."
Since Jane McManus is gone, do you think Sarah Spain and Kay Fagan (who both seem to be staying on) drop the Trifecta name or do they find someone else to take her spot? I really found their segments interesting when they got together and it still sucks to see McManus get laid off.

On a related note, is Lindsey Czarniak still with the company? I've seen here on a few things here and there since she got back from maternity leave, but she obviously doesn't host SportsCenter anymore since they turned her weekdays 6PM spot over to Michael Smith and Jemele Hill.

I did not see her name recently as anyone who was released but it seems she is still there for the time being that is. I can't remember last time she was on TV. In regards to who replaces Walsh is up in the air. Cari Champion is secure in her west coast spot for now and it seems they are content with using Fagan and Spain in their part commentator roles tho it seems Fagan is being groomed for a host spot as she occasionally does OTL when Ley is not there. I wonder if they start using Pablo Torre more. He's been a senior writer since 2012 and he's only like 30 or 31. He's big on analytics so I wonder if they start giving him segments to focus on with that type of stuff

I can also see Mina Kimes being used more. She seems to be someone ESPN wants to push as an up and coming star. And she has the best laugh on the network.

You do not have to rush these people, just let their personalities get over. It's why Hill and Smith went from podcast, to tv show to "anchors" of sportscenter. Same with Scott Van Pelt They can use a redo on a lot of shows. The NBA broadcast is not the same without Steele as Beadles does not have personality. Jalen Rose is bland. They already killed a lot of the baseball staff. ESPN just needs to let their young talent flourish as compared to showing Stephen A or Le Betard multiple segments a day. Also why Brian Windhorst did not get fired? I know he's been LBJ reporter since he was in high school but damn they are essentially paying him for nothing.

I still don't get why ESPN pays so much for MLB, Fox only pays under $500 million a year for baseball and they get the World Series. Besides the money is in regional broadcasting for baseball. I imagine ESPN will not renew baseball. The football contracts are probably the only ones that make money for them.
