I gotta see WrestleRock 1986. The only thing I know about WrestleRock is that hilarious "Going to the WreslteRock Rumble" music video. So I'm going to watch this show and take a few notes. Let's see what this show has to offer.
First match is local hero against an evil Soviet guy. USA prevails of course. I can't get over all the empty seats in the gigantic Metrodome.
Midget wrestling!! Lord Littlebrook & Little Tokyo vs. Cowboy Lane & Little Mr. T. This match is great. I want more of this.
Wahoo McDaniel vs. Col. DeBeers. I'm glad the announcers described Col. DeBeers character, otherwise I would have no idea he's a minority-hating bigot. He just looks like a mustache enthusiast to me. This match sucked. Wahoo got DQ'd for throwing DeBeers over the top rope, which didn't seem like the planned finish. I could be wrong, but it was a very confusing ending to this match none the less.
Buck Zumhoffe vs. Tiger Mask. Buck Zumhoffe - Holy shit this guy!! He does a promo before the match and he has the kind of energy I can only describe as "cocaine charisma." He looks like what you would get if you asked Jack Black to parody a 1980's "rocker" wrestler. Tiger Mask wins to mild boos. I was kind of surprised the foreigner went over the Minnesotan.
Mike Rotundo does a promo before his match and says "We're going to do our job." I'm going to laugh so hard if they lose. So it's Rotunda & Windham ve. The Fabulous Ones. This match doesn't do much for me. Standard 1980's tag team wrestling. The announcer should stop saying "Rotunda needs to get the tag off." Sounds dirty. Windham comes in and gets the win even though he's not the legal man, and the announcer completely no-sells this.
This show moves onto the next match quickly, which I like. Now we got "Bulldog" Bob Brown vs. Giant Baba. This match is a giant poo-poo. The less said about it, the better.
Next is Harley Race vs. Rick Martel. They have a guest ring announcer for this match, who is 100x better than the regular ring announcer. The crowd seemed bored with this match, but I enjoyed it. I'm such a Harley Race mark though. Best headbutt in the business. The match ends in a disappointing double count-out. They brawl for a bit outside with Martel left standing tall.
We're an hour an 45 minutes in. 2 more hours to go! Wow this a long show. Hey it's time for some women! A 10 woman over-the-top-rope battle royal. The only names I recognize are Luna (Leona) Vachon and Sherri Martel. Vachon definitely stands out in this match. One lady gets tossed out in the first 15 seconds. The announcer has no idea how to call this thing. I think he only knows who half of these women are. Sherri won and got a $50,000 check.
We're now two hours into the show. I'm going to have to take a break and come back tomorrow with part 2. Stay tuned!!

The regular ring announcer is Gary Michael Capetta before he found his real voice in WCW. I'm watching this now and this seems really disjointed. If they had tightened up the presentation and it would have been just fine. Also, love Ron Trongard as PBP, just wish he had some help during that woman's battle royal.

If they had tightened up the presentation and it would have been just fine. Also, love Ron Trongard as PBP, just wish he had some help during that woman's battle royal. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't even realize the ring announcer is Gary Capetta. I'm definitely familiar with his work in WCW. Not only is his voice a bit weird on this show, but he has a couple miscues - like when he started introducing Little Tokyo as hailing from Chicago. Not his best night for sure. I also agree the production is a bit sloppy. I failed to mention that in my previous post, but there are tons of odd camera cuts and awkward silence between matches. I can only imagine how much of a technical challenge this show was for the little ol' AWA in 1986. I'm not familiar with the commentator at all. For the most part he's good. It's gotta be difficult calling this whole show by yourself. Personally I think he could use some relief in the form of a color guy, but the single announcer gives the show a very old-school feel which I like. I'm anxious to see how he holds up during this long ass show while I watch the second half today.

Alright I'm back for part two of my review of WrestleRock 1986. What better way to spend a lazy Sunday then by watching some AWA from 30 years ago?
As Kamala comes to the ring they bleeped out a fan shouting an f-bomb at him. The opponent, Sgt. Slaughter, comes out in full Army gear - including a helmet. He hands out some mini US flags to fans in the front row. Slaugter's tights have the GI Joe logo on them. Hey they got another commentator for this match! This match was pretty good. They got the crowd to pop huge for a body slam. Slaughter - the "America's Champion" wins by DQ after Skandor Akbar interfered. Slaughter whoops some Ugandan ass after the match. He even led some kids in a Pledge of Allegiance after the match. Yay USA.
AWA Tag Team Championship match. The Long Riders ("Wild" Bill Irwin & Scott "Hog" Irwin) vs. Curt Hennig & "Big" Scott Hall (Champions). Oh this should be good. Curt Hennig and Scott Hall have some awesome curls lol. They both look to be in great shape. Hall is wearing a Ribera jacket. They give Hall a trophy before the match for winning the "most popular" poll in the Pro Wrestling Report. This match was really good. Very simple story. The Long Riders tried to use dirty tactics to defeat the physically superior champions, but Hennig got the win in the end after a missile dropkick from the top rope. More physicality ensued after the match, but Hall & Hennig were left standing tall. They each got some mic time after the match and it appears their feud with the Irwins will continue.
They interviewed Scott LaDoux before his match. I dunno who this guy is. He says he's gonna come down on Larry Zbyszko like "1,000 tons of Idaho potatoes." LMAO. This next match will be contested under "European rules" (ten 2 minute rounds). LaDoux and Zybysko both have boxing gloves on. Zbyszko looks ridiculous in some sort of Japanese robe and headband. He's got a guy dressed like a ninja with him. LaDoux has a guy known as "Benchwarmer Bob" with him. I am very confused. Apparently they're wearing karate gloves, not boxing gloves. LaDoux is introduced as being from the "great state of Minnesota." I'm getting tired of them putting Minnesota over so much. The announcers tell us this is a battle of boxer vs wrestler so I guess LaDoux is a boxer. This is a very interesting match once it gets going. I like it. Very realistic fighting. Dare I say MMA-style? The first round is a chaotic. Zbyszko starts to take the advantage in rounds 2 & 3. LaDoux reverses momentum in the fourth round and ends the round with a sick looking knockout punch. Zbyszko is saved by the bell, however. As the 5th round starts, the fight spills outside the ring. Zbyszko sends LaDoux into the ring post and the referee - Larry "The Axe" Hennig - calls the match off. Zbyszko is DQ'd. The fight continues. The ninja gets involved and Zbyszko uses his nunchucks to beat down LaDoux. Finally, Larry Hennig lands a punch to Zybysko that knocks him out of the ring to end the brewhaha. This match was insane and I loved it.
(Extra note: I Googled Scott LaDoux after the show to check the spelling of his name and learned that he is in fact a legit boxer. He's fought and/or sparred with all the big names in the boxing world. His Wikipedia page only says that he was a referee for AWA with no mention of his wrestling "career."
Next up is Nick Bockwinkel vs. Stan Hansen. Hansen takes down the interviewer/commentator on his way to the ring and puts the boots to him for seemingly no reason. Hansen looks pissed. Bockwinkel has a whip to keep Hansen at bay. This match is for the AWA Heavyweight Championship. The commentator (Larry Nelson) was able to recover to return to the broadcast table. I'm glad he's been on commentary for the second half of this show. The match is pretty good. The ref takes a bump while Bockwinkel get a visual 3 count on the champion. As the ref recovers, Hansen executes a back body drop that sends Bockwinkel over the top rope and out of the ring. The ref calls for the bell and Bockwinkel wins by DQ. Lame ending. Bockwinkel gives a promo and for the third match in a row they indicate this feud is to be continued.
Now it's time for the main event. We finally made it. There's a steel cage. Entering first is the team of The Barbarian and King Kong (Bruiser) Brody. They are facing the team of Greg Gagne and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. Snuka is apparently a replacement for the "seriously injured" Jerry Blackwell (whom I'm unfamiliar with.) The stipulation is that if Snuka and Greg Gagne win, Verne Gagne gets The Sheik Adnan El Kassey in the ring for 10 minutes. I already don't like this match and it hasn't even started yet. Greg Gagne just doesn't look like he belongs in the main event. He looks like Nunzio. Gagne & Snuka win of course. So then Verne Gagne and The Sheik enter the cage and this is treated as an actual match. Old man Verne wins with a small package. I didn't care for any of this.
But wait there's more! After an abrupt cut, we now have the Road Warriors in the ring to face Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin. The steel cage still surrounds the ring. This match is better than the last one at least. It's short and sweet. Animal does a great show of power by pressing Garvin multiple times. The Road Warriors get the win after Hayes accidentally knocks down Garvin. And that's pretty much it. The show quietly goes off the air with no wrap-up or credits or anything. I'm not sure why they called the Gagne/Snuka/Brody/Barbarian match the main event. Bockwinkel/Hansen should have been the main event and given more time if you ask me. But whatever. Overall I guess I enjoyed AWA WrestleRock 1986. The midget match and the Zbyszko match were my favorites.

They really do need more retro stuff. I have a friend who is trying to watch every WWE show ever and still has to go through Dailymotion for Wrestling Challenge, a lot of SNME and OG Superstars. I, personally, want to watch World Class, but there isn't enough up for me to feel like binging it.

Dammit! Like two weeks ago I really wanted to watch Lawler vs Von Erich from Superclash 3 and had to watch some crappy footage of it. Now of course I've seen it and don't need to again for the next decade.

Seriously I can't find the Super Sunday show through the Roku 3 and it's annoying me. Yes the link works on the lap top but I want to watch it on TV. The same thing happened with collections but the other AWA shows showed up.

My guess is that Buck Zumhoffe was someone AWA was willing to have lose against Tiger Mask, which was a pretty important investment for AJPW. They had bought the rights to the character and given the character to Mitsuharu Misawa. Zumhoffe was kind of like AWA's Koko B. Ware or Brooklyn Brawler. And I'll go ahead and mention that in real life is a total creep. AWA had a working relationship for years with All Japan, as NWA had a relationship with New Japan for several years. They weren't going to have Tiger Mask lose to someone like Rock n' Roll Buck Zumhoffe.

I'm surprised that they didn't explode after Superclash 3. The 00:24 match between Wayne Bloom and Jimmy Valient should have put things over the top for the AWA.
Was fun to see the Guerrero's, DDP, Cactus Jack, GMC, Ivory, and Jeff Jarrett in their younger years. GMC reading the intros directly out of the program is a nice touch.
